AOP and Harman photo issue red dot call for entries
Release Issued by Harman & AOP:

Two leading figures in the photographic community stage unique exhibition in support of international eye care charity

As with all photo competitions, DPNow urges all potential competitors to read the terms and conditions before entering their work in case a claim is made on the use or copyright of your pictures. Also, beware of any subsequent offers that ask you to pay for items that result from competitions before parting with any cash.

Photographers, art collectors and the art-loving general public across the UK are about to enjoy the opportunity to indulge their passion for photography whilst benefiting a good cause. It’s thanks to the recent call for entries for Red Dot event – a unique charity.

This innovative exhibition and auction is being staged by the Association of Photographers (AOP) in partnership with HARMAN PHOTO, bringing together two organisations with a steadfast commitment to photography and its continuing development.

Formed in 1968 and with a membership now totalling over 1800, the AOP is a not-for-profit organisation focused on bringing professional photographers together and on championing their needs – whether that’s by protecting their rights, providing information services or by promoting the medium of photography to a wider audience.

Likewise, HARMAN PHOTO has continually sought new and better ways to meet the professional photographer’s product needs. Born out of the ILFORD formed in 1879 and named after that company’s original founder, Alfred Harman, HARMAN PHOTO offers a complete range of premium inkjet papers; all utilising Baryta technology to ensure the photographer can produce superior quality digital prints.

Its sister business ILFORD PHOTO, meanwhile, offers world class monochrome products and has recently launched a campaign to ‘Defend the Darkroom’, which aims to help protect the art of darkroom development and encourage the co-existence of analogue black and white and digital photography.

The concept behind the event itself is quite simple. AOP members submit prints of their work for a special Red Dot exhibition at the AOP Gallery – a prestigious venue located on the edge of the City of London in Shoreditch EC2 which, for over 21 years, has been a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in contemporary photography.

Throughout the exhibition, which runs from the 12th December 2007 to the 18th January 2008, prints of the exhibits will also be for sale whilst on the opening night there will be a special signed print auction.

All proceeds raised are then set to be donated to Sightsavers – an international charity which works to combat blindness in developing countries, restoring sight through specialist treatment and eye care. The charity also supports people who are irreversibly blind by providing education, counselling and training.

Speaking of the event, AOP Gallery Project Manager, Rachel Rogers, said: “Red Dot is an exciting and noble undertaking. Not only will it allow us to showcase the work of our members to a wide audience, but it also employs photography in a way that benefits others. We are hoping its timing will be advantageous too as any of the exhibits would make a great Christmas present.”

Her views were echoed by HARMAN PHOTO’s Marketing Manager Judy Wong: “Everyone at HARMAN PHOTO is passionate about photography and about the concept of the visual image as art. However, it’s easy to forget how fortunate we are and how there are many people, especially in the developing world, who are unable to fully appreciate something we take for granted. That’s why we were only too pleased to get involved with Red Dot. It represents the chance for us to give something back.”

Those AOP members looking to enter should visit www.the-aop.org to download an entry form. At the same time, they will also be able to request a free 15 sheet A3 sample pack of HARMAN PHOTO Professional Inkjet Paper, choosing from HARMAN PHOTO MATT FB Mp, HARMAN PHOTO MATT FB Mp WARMTONE or HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB AL.
