REEF: Exploring The Underwater World

Words & photography by Scubazoo
Publication Date: 6th September 2007
Price: £25.00

Fed up with your day job? Struggling into work on the daily commute every morning? Wishing you were on holiday and could relax on a sunny beach somewhere instead? Why not join Scubazoo, the acclaimed team of dynamic underwater cameramen, for an unprecedented insight into the Earth’s most beautiful and diverse aquatic environments.  Reef: Exploring The Underwater World will be published by DK on September 6th, price £25.00.

From the publishers who brought you Rainforest, and published in association with The Marine Conservation Society, Reef is a stunning photographic exploration of the underwater world, including previously unpublished photography from Scubazoo’s archives.

With a degree in Zoology but finding himself stuck behind a sales desk in London, CEO and founding member of Scubazoo Simon Christopher decided to follow his dream, resigned from his job, and set off from the UK for the furthest shores of the planet. Simon set up the Scubazoo office in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, in an area known as ‘the coral triangle’, the heart of the world’s fish and coral biodiversity.  The four other key members of the team, all fellow divers sharing a passion for the underwater world, joined Simon in Sabah shortly thereafter to establish Scubazoo’s team of cameramen, marine biologists, and conservationists. The Scubazoo team have devoted their lives to the filming and preservation of reefs worldwide with projects including the BBC series Planet Earth, as well as National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet and many others.  Accompanying each copy of Reef is a 30 minute DVD with amazing underwater footage mirroring chapters in the book, giving the reader an added 3D tour of reefs worldwide.

Coral Reefs are the largest living structure on the planet. Created by the skeletons of live corals, they make up one percent of the Earth’s surface and are home to 25% of all marine fish species, provide food and livelihood for five million people, generate billions of dollars in goods and services and yet at the present rate of destruction could mostly disappear by 2050.  Reef’s superb and lavish collection of photographs record these remarkable and important structures, along with the reef’s surrounding plant and animal life.  A series of maps highlights the distribution of reefs worldwide, and a “behind the scenes” section shows Scubazoo in action, capturing the images that feature in the book.  Reef will appeal to anyone interested in travel, diving, photography, natural history, geography, conservation, and the environment.

To celebrate publication, the Scubazoo team will be available for interview in the UK Monday 10th, Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th September 2007.  At 6.30pm on Tuesday, 11th September 2007 DK will host a launch party to celebrate Reef’s publication.  In addition, on Monday 24th September 2007 Jason Isley and Matthew Oldfield from Scubazoo will give a talk at the Royal Geographical Society, London, entitled ‘Reef - A Race Against Time To Save The World's Marine Habitats’.  Jason and Matthew will talk about their conservation work around the world and the immense pressures that continue to threaten the survival of marine habitats. Illustrated with amazing photography and video footage from Scubazoo's work worldwide, including DK's book, Reef.
