First Direct Bank offers £5,000 prize for best photographs of those working unusual hours
Release Issued by First Direct:

How we work now: search is on for the best images of the “five-to-nine” economy

DPNow says: "Before entering any photographic competition, you should read the fine print of the rules very carefully, in case a claim will be made on the use of and/or copyright of your entry. And beware of ulterior motives to sell you something after the competition has entered. In most cases these concerns are not an issue, but it's always worth checking."

first direct, the leading 24 hour bank, has launched an online competition in which budding amateur photographers can win £5,000 by sending in their best interpretation of the “five-to-nine” economy*.

Research by the bank has found that over one third of us now work outside the “traditional” nine-to-five working day.  In recognition and to celebrate those who work to create the UK’s vibrant 24 hour society, first direct will exhibit the photography on its website at www.firstdirect.com\5to9.  The image picked by an expert panel of judges as the best entry will net its creator a £5,000 prize.

Two runners-up prizes of £250 each will also be up for grabs.

Mark Mullen, director of marketing at first direct said: “We are an established 24 hour business offering leading service for the emerging 24 hour society.  So it seemed natural that we should celebrate those who work non-traditional hours and might want to choose a non-traditional bank.”

The competition launches online on 23 July, when entrants can submit photographs that they feel best captures the spirit of the five-to-nine economy.  An exhibition of finalists will be available to view online in mid-September and the winner, chosen by the panel will be announced in late-October.

The panel will comprise of: renowned commercial photographer Mike Smith, the team at top London photographic agency Wyatt Clarke & Jones and Mark Mullen, Head of Marketing at first direct.

Entrants can send their photographs to [email protected] with their contact details and an explanation of their photograph in no more than a hundred words.

The file size of each photo entered cannot be over 2MB.

* The ‘five-to-nine’ economy comprises of economic activity that is generated outside of conventional working hours, between 5pm and 9am. The value of this economic activity in the five-to-nine economy can be quantified in the number of jobs, gross value added and productivity. We have analysed employees in the five-to-nine economy including the relevant:

•       Full-time workers
•       Part-time workers
•       Shift workers
•       Those working in excess of 37.5 hours per week

Sunday/ flexi-time workers were also investigated.

An alternative way of looking at this is to examine which people do actually work a strict nine-five pattern. By definition the rest of the employed population are part of the five-to-nine economy.
