Explore a land of ancient history, beauty and magic with the stunning Tibet through the Lens photography exhibition.
The Tibet Autonomous Region is an ethnic autonomous area located in southwest China with Tibetans as the main local inhabitants. It is situated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau which is known as the ‘roof of the world’. With its grandiose natural scenery, vast plateau landscape, holy mountains, sacred lakes, ancient architecture and unique culture, Tibet is a place that many people are eager to visit and a paradise for photographers.
From 25 June to 10 July 2005, one hundred well-known photographers from 19 foreign countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, and China were invited to visit Tibet. They visited Lhasa city and Xigaze, Shannan, Nyingchi and Nagqu prefectures and took photographs in more than 100 places covering natural scenery, religious sites, culture and education, folk customs, factories, businesses and villages. Nearly 150,000 photographs were taken and over 700 of these were exhibited in the exhibition Tibet through the eyes of 100 photographers held in Beijing.
A selection of these photographs entitled Tibet through the Lens will be shown at the Royal Albert Hall as part of its reflect exhibition series from Wednesday 4 – Sunday 29 April 2007.
The project and exhibition were sponsored by the State Council Information Office of China, the China Photographers’ Association and the Tibet Autonomous Region Information Office. It is presented by the Royal Albert Hall with kind support from Asia House.
