How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected
Today's DPNow Picture of the Day is a real action shot from the world of MotoGP, the formula one of motorcycle racing. And it's of, none other than, Valentino Rossi, the multiple world champion bike rider who is often described as the Michael Schumacher of the two-wheeled sport.
The picture we are featuring is by Mick Johnson: "I am a very keen Motorbike racing fan and took it this year at the British round of Moto-GP, at Donnington Park. It is of course Valentino Rossi, the most famous and successful rider in the world."
To get good quality panned shots of cars and bikes passing at speed takes a great deal of skill and pracitce. Mick explains: "I used a Canon 20D and a Sigma 100-300 f4 and took over 300 shots in all as I wanted most of the riders."
Mick's shot is very good, indeed. The daylight conditions, probably with some cloud to soften up the light, lend a lot to this picture, Mick has selected a slow enough shutter speed to allow very good blurring of the background and yet he has kept the bike pin sharp with steady panning of the camera. If you look very closely you will see that there is about half an inch between Rossi's front wheel and the road, suggesting he's flooring it at the moment he was captured.

Mick is an enthusiastic photographer: "I am a very, very keen amatuer photographer and took up photography, seriously, about 6 years ago after joining my local camera club and entering the competitions. I do like most forms of photography particulary Birds, Landscape, some Sports, Close-up etc." He only has a couple of images in his DPNow gallery, but I'm sure we'll all be encouraging him to upload som more soon!
