HP Introduces the HP Photosmart 8150, a High Performance Mini Photo Lab for the Home

HP Photosmart 8150
Versatile and sophisticated printer produces professional quality prints with exceptional fade resistance

LONDON, UK, 1 September 2004. HP today announced the launch of the HP Photosmart 8150, a stylish, high performance 6-ink photo printer that produces realistic, long lasting photos. With its host of built-in tools, controls and connectivity options, this advanced but easy to use unit brings all the convenience of photo lab processing into the home.

A combination of built-in 6.4 cm colour image display and slots for any digital camera memory card means users can edit photos straight from the printer without the need for a computer, without compromising on quality or speed. Edit options available on the in-printer menu include red-eye reduction, brightness adjustment, zoom, rotate, crop, video playback, video freeze and print and more. A simple dial interface makes it easy to choose the layout of pictures on the sheet of paper, or to print borderless photos in A4, 13 x 18 cm large snapshot size and 10 x 15 cm sizes, as well as 10 x 30 cm panorama size . PictBridge connectivity is also available.

The HP Photosmart 8150 comes complete with its own software suite – HP Image Zone – which offers further choices in terms of editing, effects and layout, as well as tools for organising, sharing by e-mail or web, and laying out photos, including a new and easy-to-use Panorama creator which allows printing on panorama size paper (10 x 30 cm). This integrated approach to hardware, software and in-printer tools effectively makes the HP Photosmart 8150 a mini home photo lab, with a full suite of digital tools plus the flexibility, convenience and control of being able to edit, enhance and print right there and then.

The HP Photosmart 8150 makes use of a new generation of HP inkjet print cartridges, with new inks that offer exceptional fade resistance and professional image quality. In addition, a new printhead architecture with double the previous nozzle density significantly improves print speeds in high quality photo modes. The HP Photosmart 8150 comes complete with the HP No. 343 tri-colour inkjet print cartridge and the HP No. 348 photo inkjet print cartridge. The HP No. 343 (or No. 344) tri-colour inkjet print cartridge when used together with the HP No. 348 photo inkjet print cartridge offers users a wide range of colours for true-to-life photos, accurate skin tones and smooth gradation between colours, meaning professional looking photos very time.

For ultimate creative control, customers can purchase any other print cartridges from the range and swap them in so they have the right set of inks available for their print job. Inkjet print cartridges not in use can be stored in a print cartridge protector included with the HP Photosmart 8150 to ensure the inks don’t dry out. To print black and white photos customers can use the HP No. 100 grey photo inkjet print cartridge which contains light grey, dark grey and photo black inks bringing striking details to black and white photos.

For laser-quality sharp black text and professional results, HP customers can purchase the HP No. 338 / 339 black inkjet print cartridge. Using the high capacity HP No. 339 black inkjet print cartridge will deliver performance levels equivalent to an HP Deskjet printer, with up to 26 pages per minute in black text and excellent results on plain paper.

The HP Photosmart 8150 therefore offers a no-compromise combination of image quality, fade resistance and print speed. It is fully compatible with the existing range of HP media, with best results achieved using HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, a 280 g/m² stock that feels like traditional photo paper and comes in a choice of sizes and either high-gloss or satin-matt finishes.

Other options include a Bluetooth adapter for wireless printing from camera phones, PDAs, notebooks and other Bluetooth devices; an automatic two-sided printing module with small paper tray (100-sheet capacity); an additional tray for 250 sheets of plain paper, and a wireless print server from the HP JetDirect range.

The HP Photosmart 8150 is available from October 2004 at a recommended street price of £169 (actual prices may vary)

About HP
HP is a technology solutions provider to consumers, businesses and institutions globally. The company’s offerings span IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, global services and imaging and printing. For the four fiscal quarters ended April 30, 2004, HP revenue totaled $76.8 billion. More information about HP is available at www.hp.com/uk

1) From 1 September 2004, HP Premium Plus Photo Paper will be available in two new convenient pre-cut sizes – 10 x 30 cm panorama size and 13 x 18 cm large snapshot size for versatile photo printing.

2) Tests conducted by Wilhelm Imaging Research, with HP Premium Plus Photo Paper on a HP Photosmart 7960 delivered fade resistance of up to 73 years with colour printing (using the HP No. 57 and No. 58 inkjet print cartridges) and 115 years for black and white images (using the HP No. 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge).

Results of early internal HP testing indicate that three and four ink colour photos printed on HP Premium and HP Premium Plus photo papers should resist fading longer than with previously introduced HP six and eight ink printing systems. Fade resistance tests with the new HP inkjet print cartridges for six and eight ink colour photo printing are in progress with Wilhelm Imaging Research. Based on internal HP test results, HP is confident that colour photos printed on HP Premium and HP Premium Plus photo papers will resist fading longer than with previously introduced six and eight ink printing systems.

Internal HP testing show that black and white photos printed with the new HP No. 100 grey photo inkjet print cartridge will yield the same excellent fade resistance as the HP No. 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge (introduced in 2003).

3) In the HP No. 343 and 344 tri-colour inkjet print cartridges and the HP No. 348 photo print cartridge the number of nozzles has doubled to 600.
