HP announces Bluetooth Deskjet

First Bluetooth printer from HP plus five new Deskjets for Christmas

Spaghetti is something that should keep to a plate and a good bolognaise sauce. Unfortunately, it has migrated to the backs of computers and peripherals and even cameras, in the form of horrid tangling cables.

Bluetooth, the new wireless data protocol, has been widely touted as the solution to rid us of IT spaghetti and Hewlett-Packard can now claim to be the first manufacturer to release a Bluetooth-equipped ink-jet printer, the DeskJet 995c.The 995c uses much the same Photoret III print engine as the current Photosmart printer family.

The main difference is that it doesn’t have memory card slots built in. We’re promised Bluetooth-equipped digital cameras and, indeed, Canon showed us a prototype at the CeBIT IT fair in Hannover, Germany, earlier this year (see right).

You will be able to see 995cs in the shops from the middle of next week, probably priced around £329.

Other new Deskjets from HP

Meanwhile, HP has announced five other Deskjet printers ready for the Christmas market. All use HP’s 4-colour Photoret III system for photo printing - exactly the same system as in HP’s Photosmart printer range, though depending on model, with slower print throughput.

Pricing and availability (estimated street prices are inclusive of VAT):

  • HP deskjet 960c £149 available 1 October 2001
  • HP deskjet 940c £99  available 1 October 2001
