HP wasn’t only announcing new cameras today. We were also given a sneak preview of HP’s new flagship Photosmart ink-jet printer, the P1315.
To be officially launched later in the coming week, the P1315 is an evolutionary development of the current P1215 and P1218 models. The main additions include a Sony memory stick compatible card slot in addition to SmartMedia and Compact Flash and there is now a small LCD screen for command function menus and image previewing.
There was a little confusion as to whether or not JetSend infra red wireless printing remains supported on the P1315 as the latest cameras announced today no longer feature this facility. However, there is what looks like an IR receiver under the main control panel.
Like its predecessors, the P1315 uses HP Photoret technology in conjunction with 3 colour plus black pigmented inks. Most of HP’s competitors use extra intermediate colours to improve grain and tonal characteristics. Direct prints from the Photosmart 715 camera we were testing today looked very good.
Printing from a Sony memory stick card (white version - see above) we happened to have on hand was less successful as the printer only detected half the images stored on the card. However, the printer we had today was a pre-production sample.
Pricing and availability will be posted here in a few days time.
