No - it’s not a digicam...

...But it sure looks like one. This is Kodak’s Advantix Preview camera. Like a typical digital camera, there is a colour LCD view screen on the back so you can check out who had their eyes closed when you pressed the shutter button.

However, this is an APS (Advanced Photo System) film camera. The camera has a digital imaging sensor, but simply to let you see what the film has recorded. If the picture needs to be re-taken, you can’t erase the image from the film like you can with a digital camera. So what we have here is a hybrid digital and film camera - though the digital side of it is strictly restricted to that preview screen.

The camera, with the aid of the preview facility, does let you choose print quantities for selected images and lets you view what the picture will look like in the various wide screen modes APS offers.

As digital camera prices go, the Advantix Preview camera is cheap at £199, but you’ll find it’s one of the more expensive examples of the APS breed.
