1GB solid state CF from SanDisk

If you want a gigabyte of compact flash storage on a single card, soon you will no longer need a camera with a beefed up Type II CF slot and an IBM Microdrive.

SanDisk, which originally invented the Compact Flash card, has today announced plans to introduce a 1.0GB Compact Flash card that should work in any camera with a standard CF Type I slot, the most common configuration out there. Currently, the highest capacity cards available are either 512MB or 640MB.

Nelson Chan, senior vice president and general manager of SanDisk's retail business unit, commented: “Introducing a 1GB CompactFlash card in the Type I format is a technological breakthrough for SanDisk”,... adding: “These cards demonstrate how rapidly flash technology is moving forward and provide the first indication of how SanDisk's technology will begin to displace recording tapes and disks in future consumer audio and video products."

SanDisk says the new card should ship within the first three months of 2002, so, sadly, you won’t be able to get one for Christmas. It’s expected to sell for under $800 - or about £570.
