Pacific Image, which claims to be the market leader for film scanners sold in the US, has announced a ‘Silver’ version of its Primefilm PF1800 model. This supplements the existing PF1800u and PF1800i models. Jessops markets the Primefilm line here in the UK. The 1800 series also has a distinct family resemblance to Microtek’s Film Scan 35 product.
From the hardware specifications we can’t see a lot of difference between the PF1800 Silver and the PF1800U. Both are 1800dpi resolution and rated at 36-bit colour density. According to Pacific’s marketing information, “The PF1800 Silver is a more powerful tool targeted for the needs of desktop publishers, graphic designers, photographers and PC/photo enthusiasts”.
SilverFast SE 5.0, an image editing package developed in Germany is the star feature of the PF1800 Silver. You’re also supplied with Adobe Photoshop 5.0LE. Connection is via USB to either Windows or Mac computers.
The PF1800 Silver carries a suggested price tag of $299 in the US, or about £215, substantially more than the Jessops price for the PF1800U of £120. This price discrepancy appears to be down to the software bundle.
