Kodak lambasts Windows XP

By Ian Burley

6th August - 2001

As we reported on 1st August, Microsoft rallied its Windows XP partners at a big industry event in preparation for the next iteration of the Microsoft OS. Kodak was one of the favoured guests last Monday.

But just a few days later, the fur is flying between the two companies. Kodak is upset because it feels Microsoft is using its strength as the supplier of Windows XP to favour its chosen commercial partners - at Kodak’s expense.

Windows XP, when it is launched in October, will include preconfigured choices for users to employ commercial digital photo printing services, for example. Kodak believes the default options, which don’t include Kodak are commercially biased.

A broad hint is that Microsoft is snubbing Kodak deliberately because of the latter’s commercial relationship with rival AOL. We’ve requested formal responses from both Kodak and Microsoft regarding this story and we’ll post them as soon as we get anything.

Meanwhile, our friend, Phil Askey, who runs the mega-site Digital Photography Review, has been monitoring this increasingly turbulent relationship. Click here to see his coverage.
