If anyone was in doubt that digital photography should be taken seriously yet, think again. Microsoft is taking it seriously and has introduced important digital photography functionality into the specifications of the next version of Windows, XP, which is due to be launched in October.

To underline this, Microsoft today held an a photo industry shindig featuring representatives of many of the big name PC, photography and peripheral products brands, all showing how their products can make the most of Window XP digital imaging features.

One quote from the event from Chris Jones, vice president of the Windows Division at Microsoftwent: "This is a great opportunity for Microsoft and leading companies in the industry to work together to deliver end-to-end digital photography experiences for consumers,"

Windows XP will include a new feature, called Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP), for simplifying the acquisition of images from cameras linked to computers, scanner and printers.  Like all recent editions of Windows, the My Documents folder has a My Pictures sub-folder and this is set up to show images as thumbnails as a default. XP also includes photo printing enhancement applications, plus aids for uploading, sharing and printing photos using online services.

Many users will prefer to use independent ‘best of breed’ applications instead of the bundled applications within Windows XP. However, having standard tools built in to XP should encourage more people to try digital photography out, which can only be good for the industry.
