Official Canon press release: ‘Canon Digital Creators Contest 2002’ Extends Reach To Encompass Entries From Around The Globe. Canon (UK) Ltd, leaders in photographic and imaging technology, announced the launch of the ‘Canon Digital Creators Contest 2002’, a global competition aimed at encouraging creativity in visual artistic expression for the internet-generation. For 2002, several new collection-point cities have been added. Now, design professionals and amateurs alike from around the world can submit their artwork to Tokyo, Amsterdam, New York, Hong Kong or Sydney. Competition entries will be accepted from today until the competition closes on September 3, 2002. Canon established the Digital Creators Contest two years ago as a means of discovering and encouraging new talent among people that use these technologies. The Digital Creators Contest accepted submissions from overseas entrants for the first time last year and received 6,209 works from 57 countries, more than three times the number submitted for the inaugural Digital Creators Contest. The European launch of this competition coincides with the unveiling of what is believed to be the world’s largest digital Photomosaic that is wrapped around the IMAX cinema in central London, with similar pictures also on display in major European cities including Paris, Madrid, Milan, Düsseldorf and Stockholm. This has been commissioned as part of Canon’s new pan-European brand platform, You Can, which is designed to encourage people to realise their creative potential, a philosophy that is mirrored by this contest. Canon Digital Creators Contest 2002 comprises of four categories: Digital Photo (Print); Digital Graphics/Illustration (Print); Digital Movie; and Web. The prize money totals €128,500 including a €23,000 Gold Award to be presented in each category. Other scheduled prizes include the Canon Award and other awards from participating sponsors. Judges for this year’s contest include some of the foremost authorities in the imaging and graphics fields: award-winning photographer Jeff Schewe and the British creative unit ‘tomato’ for the Digital Photo (Print) division; illustrator and art director Katsura Moshino and ’tomato’ for the Digital Graphics/Illustration (Print) division; director Hiroyuki Nakano, and Digital Domain Inc. CEO, president & co-founder Scott Ross for the Digital Movie division; and ‘tomato’ artist and technologist Joshua Davis for the Web division. Academy Award winning composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto will also be joining the judging committee as a special judge and Hiroshi Kashiwagi,a Musashino Art University professor, will assume the role of Contest Supervisor. The committee will look for works that redefine the realm of digital visual expression, challenging the boundaries of originality, expression and message communication. The 2002 contest winners will be announced on Friday, December 6, 2002, at Spiral Café in Aoyama, Tokyo. Winning entries will be displayed at Spiral Hall from Saturday, December 7 to Sunday, December 15, 2002.
