Improved, faster, X’s Drive announced

A revised and faster version of the Vosonic VP2030 X’s Drive portable digital photo repository (reviewed – click here) has been announced. The new Vosonic VP2060 X’s Drive II is improved in two main areas: it now has a USB 2.0 Hi-speed (480Mbits/second) port instead of the standard 12MBits/sec USB port and the arrangement of LED indicator lights on the original model has been substituted for a LCD panel.

Memory Stick Pro supported As with the original X’s Drive, all the main memory card formats, including Compact Flash I/II and Microdrive, Secure Digital/Multimedia Card (SD/MMC), Sony Memory Stick (including the new Pro platform (click here)) and SmartMedia, are supported apart from the relatively new Olympus/Fujifilm xD card, though this can be used via a Compact Flash adapter. The same rechargeable internal Lithium Ion battery power source is used and is good for over an hour and a half of continuous operation.

USB 2.0 Hi-Speed With its much faster USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port, transferring large archives to PC should take a lot less time than the 1MB per second or so of the original X’s Drive. This was a consideration that apparently ruled the X’s Drive out among many professional photographers. Here at dp-now.com we’re looking forward to testing the new design as soon as possible.

Fortunately the added features of the new X’s Drive hasn’t rocketed the price up and the 20MB version is just £35 or so dearer than the original X’s Drive of the same capacity.

List prices (inc. soft carry case, mains charger and VAT) are:

  • 20GB – £269.90
  • 30GB - £299.90
  • 40GB - £329.90
  • Full scale manufacturing of the X’s Drive II will start in mid-February, with initial supplies reaching dealers towards the end of the month.
