Snappers happy to lay digital life bare on social media, according to new research
by Ian Burley

20 November 2013 – New research from digital photography service, SnapBox reveals that nearly one third of us (29 per cent) upload our entire photographic life to social media channels – regardless of the content. Much like high profile music star Rihanna, today’s younger generation have a "no holds barred" attitude when it comes to sharing photos via Instagram and Facebook – with 37 per cent of 25-34 year olds surveyed admitting to being "happy snappers" and uploading all of their digital photos to these platforms without exception.

Despite this attitude, the survey also found that 25 per cent of 18-24 year olds prefer to be more selective and apply filters to social media photo sharing, like Made In Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh – preferring to be "life editors" and upload key images depicting daily life at work and with the family (compared to 15 per cent of the total sample). Eight per cent of us have extremely high standards when it comes to our photo taking and sharing habits, taking a "professional" approach by choosing to display only the best quality, arty shots to depict our lifestyle, in the same vein as supermodel Naomi Campbell.

The survey also found that despite 79 per cent of people stating a liking for physical photographs displayed in our homes, 29 per cent of us just can’t be bothered to print them out, preferring instead to store them on the computer (32 per cent) or on an external hard drive/USB (18 per cent), where they remain gathering virtual dust and at risk of being lost.

Commenting on the research, John Doe at SnapBox said: "Social media channels and photo sharing apps have made it so easy to instantly share a snapshot of daily life, with many of us using them to display every single image we take, regardless of quality or content. Whilst the prevalence of smart phones and tablets has made this much more accessible, it should not become a replacement for physically sharing and documenting significant events.

"Key images on Facebook and Instagram can become quickly swallowed up and forgotten as more and more photos get uploaded on a daily basis. With people still appreciating physical photographs displayed in their homes, it has become all the more important to complement online photo sharing with a printed memory of a special moment in time."

SnapBox turns photographs, including those from Facebook and Instagram, into high quality canvas prints. Following a successful launch last year in the US, SnapBox now offers Brits a stress-free solution to the worry of what to do with the growing number of precious images saved on smartphones today.
