Call for entries: The World's Best Scientific Images 2013

• 100 of the best scientific images sought
• Launch exhibition will open at the British Science Festival, Newcastle, 2013

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) in partnership with the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) have put out a call for the world's best scientific images.

Scientists creating images to support their research and photographers making images to record science in all its aspects showing applications of diverse photographic techniques are encouraged to submit images for this new international competition.

One hundred of the best images – selected by scientists, photographers, and those working in the field – will be included in an exhibition that will open in Newcastle in September 2013 as part of the British Science Festival and will then tour the UK and abroad.

Speaking about the competition STFC Executive Director, National Laboratories, Dr Andrew Taylor said "For the last two years STFC and RPS have worked together to promote world class scientific research facilities and equipment at the various STFC laboratories by running an annual Photowalk competition. This has led to the production of exciting and inspiring images. We look forward to working with RPS on this international photography competition and seeing more wonderful images of scientific projects."

The Royal Photographic Society has exhibited scientific photography since 1854 and the first International Images of Science Exhibition was held in 2011, coordinated by Dr Afzal Ansary.

Exhibition coordinator, Dr Afzal Ansary, commented: "The 2011 exhibition was an overwhelming success reflecting the quality of the images selected. It was seen at the Edinburgh Science Festival, the Palace of Westminster, Royal Albert Hall and at educational establishments in the UK and Europe.
The exhibition was a great showcase for the work that scientists do and how they use photography to support research and development. In addition the images are frequently beautiful and fascinating works of art at the same time".

Entries can be submitted from 1 November 2012 until 28 February 2013.

More information can be found at: www.rps.org/IISE2013 which includes a link to upload submissions.
