Two superzooms, an ultra compact, a tough/waterproof, and the LX3 successor from Panasonic Lumix

The new Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 skips a number and replaces the much-vaunted LX3

Panasonic Lumix has unveiled its summer collection of new camera models. There is nothing new from the G-Micro (Micro Four Thirds mirror-less interchangeable system or 'hybrid') range, but we do get the long-expected LX3 successor in the LX5. There are also two new superzoom bridge cameras, the FZ45 and the FZ100, the latter sporting an articulating LCD screen. There is the latest in Panasonic's long line in ultra compact cameras in the FX700, and finally we have a new tough/waterproof compact in the FT10. Improved Venus Engine image processing and sensors are among the benefits offered by the new cameras and we have the full details in Panasonic's official press releases for you in the pages following this one.

But for enthusiasts most eyes will be on the LX5. The out-going LX3 is regarded by some as something of a classic with its small size, yet superb 24-60mm (equivalent) Leica-branded zoom lens and brave technical move to eschew very high resolution sensors in order to preserve noise and dynamic range. If there was a criticism of the LX3 it was that its lens didn't reach forward enough for ideal portraiture shooting. The LX5 addresses this with a new 24-90mm (equivalent) Leica branded DC Vario Summicron lens. The increase in focal length at the long end of the zoom range has not sacrificed the LX3's fast f/2 aperture benefit and neither is there a noticeable weight or bulk penalty.

According to Panasonic the LX5 now has a higher sensitivity CCD sensor that further increases dynamic range and low light noise performance. Panasonic has also retained the unique 16:9 sensor format so that wide screen shooting does not require cropping of the top and bottom of the frame. AVCHD Lite video recording is featured, making the most of the CCD sensor format. And as the LX5 uses a CCD sensor instead of a CMOS type, movie fans should be free of the 'video wobble' effect that commonly afflicts CMOS sensors.

Another improvement to the LX design is a 3 inch LCD screen with improved colour rendering. There is also faster auto focusing, and latest generation Venus Engine benefits like Intelligent Resolution introduced with other Lumix models earlier this year. Besides a clip on optical viewfinder, the LX5 is now compatible with the DMW-LVF1 electronic viewfinder originally developed for use with the Lumix DMC-GF1 Micro Four Thirds camera model.

Panasonic is competing head to head with Canon and its G11 compact with the LX5 and it will be fascinating to see how these two compare out in the field.

With New High Sensitivity CCD and F2.0 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON LENS

Panasonic is proud to announce a long-awaited DMC-LX5 - a successor to the DMC-LX3, acclaimed worldwide especially by the photography enthusiasts, after two years of silence. Since the birth of DMC-LX3, the new category is established in the compact camera market, which is called premium compact cameras that features high picture quality and creative descriptiveness. The new DMC-LX5 is fully re-designed in the lens, the CCD and the image processing engine together with other improvements and upgrades.

The newly developed super bright F2.0 ultra wide angle 24mm LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens minimizes distortion for stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail. The 24mm of wide angle offers extraordinarily large viewing space and now the optical zoom is extended to 3.8x(90mm) making the LX5 even more versatile.

The highly acclaimed 10.1-megapixel CCD in the LX3 has been redesigned to achieve the expansion of dynamic range by increasing the sensitivity and the saturation. The Venus Engine FHD is also redesigned for advanced signal processing in both photo and movie recording. The high sensitivity made possible by the new sensor and the superior signal processing by the new imaging engine especially elevates the picture quality in low light situations.

For the movie recording, the DMC-LX5 is newly compatible with long time high quality HD movie recording in AVCHD Lite in addition to the conventional motion JPEG format. A host of creative options including Creative Movie mode, My Color mode and Film mode are available for more extended expression not only in photography but also in videography.

The external design is also improved to pursue high operability - the thickened grip for easier hold, the newly incorporated turn-and-push jog dial achieves various selection and setting more quickly. The hot shoe allows attachment of advanced accessories such as optional Live View Finder which helps shooting under strong daylight with high visibility. The 1:1 square format setting is added in the aspect ratio option which can be selected with the switch at the side of the lens barrel.

1. F2.0 Super Bright 24mm Ultra-Wide-Angle* High Quality LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON Lens with Minimum Distortion

The DMC-LX5 is equipped with newly developed F2.0 24mm ultra-wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens with even higher resolution. The super bright, high quality lens is redesigned for extension of the optical zoom from LX3’s 2.5x(60mm) to 3.8x(90mm) to be even more versatile for snapshots including portraits. The F2.0 lens is about twice as bright as the F2.8 lens, itself generally considered a bright lens. The result is higher shutter speed can be used to capture stunningly clear, sharp, blur-free images in lower lighting situation. This advanced lens also makes it easy to produce beautiful photos with pleasing soft-focused background thanks to the shallow depth of field provided by the extra light.

Also, the 24mm ultra-wide-angle lens - rare on a compact camera - gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities. The super-high-quality LEICA DC VARIO- SUMMICRON lens minimizes distortion at the wide end, so users can get stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail. The LX5 captures approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to that normal 35mm camera does, and even approx. 136% larger compared to that 28mm wide-angle lens can do.

The lens unit consists of 10 elements in 9 groups with 3 aspherical lenses with 5 aspherical surfaces. Minimal distortion, high resolution, minimum artifacts such as chromatic aberrations, ghosting and flaring are the proof of uncompromising imaging made possible by F2.0 24mm ultra wide angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens.

Thanks to the newly incorporated Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom is available with the LX5 which extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 3.8x optical can virtually extend to 5x equivalent. Furthermore, the Extra Optical Zoom function that extends zoom power to 6.7x (at 3-megapixel resolution) by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer.

In addition, the iris diaphragm allows the users to adjust aperture at fine steps manually.

2. Newly Designed 1/1.63-inch 10.1-megapixel High Sensitivity CCD with Wider Dynamic Range

The predecessor DMC-LX3 played a big role to cease the pixel count war by adopting 1/1.63-inch CCD for 10.1-megapixel recording to realize the unprecedented picture quality with a compact digital camera and even to establish a new premium compact camera category in the market. The CCD in the LX3 which was highly acclaimed from the specialists worldwide is redesigned to achieve the further expansion of dynamic range by increasing the sensitivity by approx. 31% and the saturation by approx.38%*. It is made possible by the improvement of on-tip-lens design with larger light concentration and VCCD expansion while deepening the photo diode to manage richer signal more effectively.

The result is a high resolution, noise-less pictures even in high sensitivity recording and richly reproduced gradation in highly contrasted situations with the exquisitely wide dynamic range. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity CCD and the brightness of the lens, minimum illumination of DMC-LX5 is as low as 3 lux in movie recording.

Normally, to produce an image of 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio, 4:3 picture will be cropped, so the picture does not have the maximum advantage of these extraordinary recording aspect. However, the CCD in DMC-LX5 can reproduce images shot with the lens set from 24mm to 90mm in any of three aspect ratios; 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9, so you can always capture dynamic, richly expressive shots with a wide perspective. The Multi Aspect mode allows the camera to take an image in all three aspect ratios simultaneously for photographer to choose the one that best takes the advantage of the scene after shooting.

3. The New Venus Engine FHD Assures High Picture Quality for Both Photo and Movie

For the image processing LSI, newly developed Venus Engine FHD is equipped with the DMC-LX5 featuring even higher-speed, higher-performance while compiling the Intelligent Resolution technology. It enables the recording of beautiful photo and high-definition movie with higher quality signal processing. The triple CPUs in this imaging engine dramatically speed up processing while achieving exceptional noise reduction performance. The Venus Engine FHD's excellent energy efficiency supports long-time AVCHD Lite movie recording, and allows the output of both images and sounds via HDMI.

At the same time, the multi-task image-processing engine Venus Engine FHD supports a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.007 second and the camera's quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities together with the Sonic Speed AF (Auto Focus) that gains approx.40% higher speed* and the quick startup time.

With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas are automatically detected. The outline parts are enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness while giving a moderate accentuation to the texture areas to look more finely detailed. To the soft gradation part, superior noise reduction system of the Venus Engine FHD is applied to make it smoother. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way for it. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and movie recording. The Intelligent Resolution technology also realizes the Intelligent Zoom, which virtually extends the optical zoom ratio to its approx. 1.3x equivalent maintaining the picture quality even combining the digital zoom. Details of an image in high sensitivity recording tend to be lost in the noise reduction process; however, the Intelligent Resolution works to keep them.

Despite the high performance, the Venus Engine FHD is superior in efficiency to extend the battery life of DMC-LX5 to 400 pictures (CIPA) per a single charge.

4. Save Memories in Movie - Start Enjoying Videography As You Enjoy Photography

In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-LX5 can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The picture quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the newly added Intelligent Resolution technology. The LX5 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio.

In movie recording, the DMC-LX5 goes further than simply recording HD movies. Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital compact cameras, the DMC-LX5 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out. My Color mode, which will be detailed later, is also available in movie recording.

The optical zoom is available in movie recording, too. With the newly added Video Divide function, users can divide the video into two sections to shorten or delete the unwanted part on the spot in the camera. You can cut out a clear still image from a movie in the camera thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology. A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. The minimum illumination is as low as 3 lux thanks to the F2.0 super bright LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens and the high sensitivity CCD.

The popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is also available in movie recording. The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Face Detection, and Intelligent Scene Selector also support shooting beautiful movie with ease. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality. The Intelligent Exposure that also optimizes the exposure to prevent over/under exposure part from occurring.

Still or motion images recorded in AVCHD Lite on SD Memory Cards are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV. Simply insert the card into the VIERA Image Viewer (SD Memory Card slot) on VIERA TV or DIGA Blu-ray Disc Player to playback your contents. Alternatively, you can use an optional mini HDMI cable to output the still and motion images you took from the LX5 directly to the TV for VIERA Link. You can take maximum advantage of LUMIX camera's playback functions including the slideshow in which both still and motion images are integrated in the timeline, category playback according to the scene mode you used or calendar display and so on. All control is possible using only the TV's remote control.

In addition, with the included software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition, it is easy to view and edit your recorded contents. You may also choose to upload your videos to YouTube or burn them to a DVD disc for archiving.

5. Enhanced Operability and Unlimited Possibility for Expression

Studying the feedback from the users of the predecessor DMC-LX3, the DMC-LX5 has been also redesigned externally to pursue its operability. Its size is almost the same but the new gently formed grip provides easier handling even in active shooting style. The hot shoe is newly added for attachment of the optional Live View Finder (DMW-LVF1), users can also choose the External Optical Viewfinder (DMW-VF1) according to their shooting style. The newly adopted jog dial enhances the operability for quick setting change and the dedicated playback button lets the user play back the images and return to the shooting menu in split seconds. The aspect can be changed directly with the aspect switch on the lens barrel among 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and the new 1:1.

In addition to the Film mode in which user can select the texture of the photo as you choose a film, My Color mode is newly added to DMC-LX5. My Color mode is a special option that gives free reign to the user's creativity. User can select the color out of 12 options including Expressive, Retro, Pure, Elegant, Monochrome, Dynamic Art, Silhouette, Pin Hole, Film Grain, High Dynamic, Dynamic B&W and Custom (the parameter of color / brightness / saturation adjustable). This makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images. The user can adjust the settings that best suit the shooting conditions and his or her expressive intent, for greater photographic control. It is available also in movie recording giving the user a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore together with the Creative Movie mode.

6. Other Features That Add Fun and Ease to the Camera

The DMC-LX5 is equipped with a 3.0-inch, 460,000-dot Intelligent LCD with super high resolution and a wide viewing angle. The screen brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The big screen reflects fine details, making it easy to check the focus before shooting. It also serves as a small photo and video viewer, allowing the user and friends to enjoy viewing the still and motion images together. Plus, reflection is suppressed with the AR coating. Plus, adopting the High CRI (Color Rendering Index) LED backlight realizes vivid, impressive color reproduction true to the memory color that your eyes remember.

The ISO value can be set in 1/3 EV increments for finer control. The maximum setting is ISO 12800* enabling shooting in extremely dark places.

The new Step Zoom option, zoom range can be set to 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, 70mm or 90mm via the easy menu as you change the fixed focal length lens with D-SLR. Max.800mm is available if combining the Intelligent Zoom and digital zoom.

The DMC-LX5 has advanced functions that will satisfy experienced photographers, yet is easy enough for beginners to use comfortably if iA(intelligent Auto)mode is used. POWER O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer), Face Recognition, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure are available in photo recording and POWER O.I.S. 1. A Credible Toughness in a Slim, Stylish Profile with 4x Optical Zoom in Folded Optics

The DMC-FT10 features a high-quality 4x optical zoom LUMIX DC Lens (35-140mm*). The folded optics of the shaft guide method is adopted to secure the toughness of the lens unit. Comprising 11 elements and a prism unit in 10 groups, including an ED lens and 4 aspherical lenses with 7 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit renders high resolution image corner to corner even adopting the folded optics. Further, in 3-megapixel resolution mode, the Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 8.4x (294mm*) by using the center part of the high resolution CCD to bring subjects even closer.

Despite its flat and futuristic profile, the DMC-FT10 is waterproof to a depth of 3m and dustproof equivalent to the "IPX8" and "IP6X" standard. Thanks to rubber padding and reinforced glass and carbon resins inside the camera, the FT10 features an airtight body protected against water immersion, dust and sand.

The FT10 is drop proof from a height up to 1.5m in accordance with the "MIL-STD 810F Method516.5-Shock" test standard. In addition to reinforcing the exterior of the camera with shock-resistant material, the FT10 uses folded optics to prevent its lens unit from taking damage when dropped during operation. The lens unit is protected by a supplementary damper to absorb the force from shock impact. The DMC-FT10 incorporates an easy-to-see, 2.7-inch 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The Intelligent LCD function detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by max. 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and adjusts the frame rate when shooting in low-lit situations in addition to using the pixel mixed readout method to secure clarity in such situations. A rich variety of scene modes make it easy to get beautiful photos in a range of photographic situations. The Beach & Surf mode is perfect for your beach activities, allowing you to use a single mode with optimized auto white balance both on the beach and in shallow water up to 3m. Baby, Pet and Sports modes take advantage of the Intelligent ISO Control as previously described, to let you get great results even if the subjects have unexpected motion. About Waterproof / Dustproof performance of the camera

This camera's waterproof/dustproof rating complies with the "IPX8" and "IP6X" ratings. Provided the care and maintenance guidelines described as following are strictly followed, this camera can operate underwater, to a depth not exceeding 3m(10FT) for a time not exceeding 60 minutes. This does not guarantee no destruction, no malfunction, or waterproofing in all conditions.

- Attention -

Cleaning the rubber seal site (Around the card/battery door, terminal cover)

If any foreign material (hair, sand, dust, liquid, etc.) is present on the rubber seal or the area where the rubber seal sits, water can leak into the camera within a few seconds and cause malfunction.

If there is any foreign material, remove with supplied brush.

- Be careful not to let foreign material get into the camera when cleaning it.

- Pay extra attention when removing fine sand or wet sand.

- Foreign material will adhere to the grooves on the side of rubber seal or its four corners. Remove with the brush.

Handling of the brush

- Prior to use, check that no foreign material etc. is present.

- After use, shake any adhered foreign material etc. off.

To prevent water leak, take care not to nip any foreign objects, and close it by pressing until it clicks. Use the camera underwater up to 3m (10FT) depth, water temperature from 0°C to 40°C, and not longer than 60 minutes continuously. Do not leave the camera under low temperature in the cold climate, or where it has high temperature above 40°C for long period of time. (Waterproof performance will degrade.) Do not use chemicals, such as benzene, thinner, or alcohol, soap, detergents. If it was used in the sea, soak the camera in fresh water a shallow container of for 10 minutes or less. Do not leave the camera uncared for more than 60 minutes after using it underwater. It may cause deterioration of the waterproof performance. To keep the waterproof performance, it is recommended to replace the waterproof seal (with fee) at least once every 1 year at the retail store where you have bought the camera. If the zoom button or Power Button is not operating correctly, shake the camera well in fresh water to wash off any foreign objects.

About Shockproof performance of the camera

The camera complies with "MIL-STD 810F (Method 516.5-Shock).

The camera has cleared a drop test from a height of 1.5m onto 3cm thick plywood. In most cases, the camera should not sustain any

damage if dropped from a height of 1.5 m or less.*

About Freezeproof performance of the camera

The performance of the battery (number of recordable pictures/operating time) may decrease temporarily when using in a temperature between -10?to0?( 14?F to 32?F) (at the cold climate such as ski resort).

If the camera gets cold in a cold environment, performance of the LCD monitor may temporarily drop immediately after turning the power on, such as the picture on the LCD monitor being slightly darker than usual or ghost images appearing. Keep the camera warm when using in a cold environment. The performance will resume to normal when the internal temperature rises.

When using the camera in a cold place such as a ski resort, if the camera is left with snow or water drops still on it, the snow or water drops in-between the zoom button, Power button may freeze, making it difficult for some parts of the camera to function properly.

This is not a malfunction. When the camera returns to normal temperature it will function normal. It is recommended to use the camera while keeping it warm in the coat etc.

There is no guarantee of not breaking or malfunctioning under all conditions.

The DMC-FX700 packages a high quality LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens that boasts an astonishing brightness of F2.2, extraordinary for a slim, stylish digital compact cameras. The F2.2 lens is about 1.6x brighter than the F2.8 lens, itself generally considered a bright lens. It lets DMC-FX700 shoot at higher shutter speed and capture stunningly clear, sharp, blur-free images in lower lighting situation. Together with the anti-blurring function in the iA mode, DMC-FX700 never allows any subject to be blurred. This advanced lens also makes it easy to produce beautiful photos with pleasing soft background focusing thanks to the shallow depth of field provided by the extra light.

Also, the 24mm ultra-wide-angle lens - rare on a compact camera - gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities with approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to that of 35mm camera. The super-high-quality LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens minimizes distortion at the wide end.

The lens unit consists of 7 elements in 6 groups with 3 aspherical lenses with 5 aspherical surfaces. The AVCHD format features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG. The picture quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology. The DMC-FX700 also boasts Dolby Digital Stereo Creator to record high quality audio.

Now on the DMC-FX700, the popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is also available in motion image recording. The AF Tracking function that can lock onto the subject to keep it in focus even it moves is now available in movie recording, too. The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Face Detection, and Intelligent Scene Selector also support shooting beautiful movie with ease. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality. To realize the 1920x1080 full HD movie recording with high image quality, the new 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor is developed for DMC-FX700. For the effective concentration of light, the newly developed sensor adopts microfabrication technology to achieve even higher sensitivity. With an advanced micro light tube structure, both color mixture and signal loss are prevented. The result is that the photo and movie shot at any sensitivity from low to high have outstanding clearness.

The high speed digital signal output technology integrated in the DMC-GH1 is applied also to the DMC-FX700 realizing the high speed consecutive shooting and full HD movie recording. It lets the DMC-FX700 to shoot 10 fps in 14-megapixel full resolution with mechanical shutter and 5 fps / 2 fps with continuous AF. Even higher speed burst shooting is available with DMC-FX700 if electronic shutter is used- 60 fps in 3.5-megapixel*. The frame rate, AF setting and the recording resolution can be easily selected according to the movement of the subject.

On the other hand, the newly added Intelligent Burst mode adjusts the frame rate of burst shooting according to the speed of the subject’s movement. If the movement of the subject is not so fast, the camera shoot is at regular frame rate and it moves fast, the camera increases it accordingly.

4. Redesigned Venus Engine FHD with Even Higher Signal Processing Performance

For the image processor, the new Venus Engine FHD is incorporated that features exceptionally advanced signal processing capabilities. By separating chromatic noise from luminance noise and applying the optimal noise reduction to each, so you can capture clear and beautiful images even when shooting at high ISO sensitivity levels. The Venus Engine FHD also provides precisely selective noise reduction to the chromatic noise without affecting the border of colors which is judged from the brightness level of a pixel. The Intelligent Resolution technology is another feature of the Venus Engine FHD. With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas - outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas are automatically detected. The outline parts are enhanced effectively to give edges more clearness while giving a moderate accentuation to the texture areas to look more finely detailed. To the soft gradation part, superior noise reduction system of the Venus Engine FHD is applied to make it smoother. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way for it. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and movie recording. The Intelligent Resolution technology also realizes Intelligent Zoom, which virtually extends the optical zoom ratio to its approx. 1.3x equivalent maintaining the picture quality even combining the digital zoom. Details of an image in high sensitivity recording tend to be lost in the noise reduction process; however, the Intelligent Resolution works to keep them. Linking smoothly with the MOS sensor, the Venus Engine FHD processes a large amount of signal at high speed, making it possible to record high resolution consecutive shots and full HD movie recording.

At the same time, the multi-task image-processing engine, the Venus Engine FHD realizes a super-fast response time. The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.008 second and the camera's quick response makes it easier to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities together with the Sonic Speed AF (Auto Focus). The high performance Venus Engine FHD is also more energy efficient despite its high processing task, assuring the battery life up to 300 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.

5. The Evolving iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode Makes Every Photo Blur-less

Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In the iA mode, the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press, aim and shoot.

With the DMC-FX700, the Motion Deblur mode* is incorporated to prevent blur even more powerfully. The mode is a comprehensive integration of Intelligent ISO Control which automatically adjusts ISO setting and shutter speed according to the subject's movement and the advanced contrast control system of Intelligent Exposure that also optimizes the exposure to prevent over/under exposure part in a picture. The camera judges the appropriate shutter speed to suppress the motion blur according to the movement of the subject. The shutter speed rises as high as possible activating the high sensitivity recording by pixel mixed readout method. Combined with the outstanding brightness of the lens and the POWER O.I.S., the DMC-FX700 thoroughly prevents any kind of blur - whether out of handshake or the subject's motion.

The newly added Intelligent Burst mode adjusts the frame rate of burst shooting according to the speed of the subject’s movement. If the movement of the subject is not so fast, the camera shoot is at regular frame rate and it moves fast, the camera increases it accordingly.

Not only those, the Face Recognition function remembers registered faces to give an appropriate AF/AE on the people while removing the unwanted red-eye. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 6 Scene modes - Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset - that best suits the shooting situation.

In addition, the Intelligent Resolution technology is always activated in the iA mode which results in the clearer and higher picture quality in every photo and movie with extended zoom range equivalent to 6.5x optical zoom by the Intelligent Zoom.

Once you enter the iA mode, these functions happen automatically together with other powerful shooting-assist functions - AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control and Intelligent Exposure - so you can shoot without the bother of adjusting settings every time conditions change. You can enjoy easy, trouble-free shooting in any situation and get the satisfaction that comes with capturing clear, beautiful images.

The Happy mode, a color mode option in the iA mode, optimizes color, saturation and brightness to make both photos and movies more vivid and true to the color of the scene you memorized.

6. The Intuitive Touch-Control Shooting on the Large, Easy-to-see LCD

The DMC-FX700 adopts full touch-screen operation. AF is immediately set to the subject by just touching it on the 3.0-inch large, 230,000-dot LCD and you can even release the shutter. Zooming is also controlled with touch operation.

Once you lock on the subject by a touch, the camera tracks the subject with the AF tracking function even if it moves. With the Intelligent Scene Selector in the iA mode, the camera automatically switches to the appropriate mode according to the subject touched. For example, a touch on a human face switches to the Portrait mode and a touch on the background or scenery to the Scenery mode while a touch on the subject close to the camera to the Macro mode. All menu setting is now available with touch control. In the shooting screen you can directly touch the icon to change its setting quickly. The touch-screen operation excels not only for shooting but also for playing back images with outstanding visibility. You can play back the image you want out of hundreds of stocks by touching in the thumbnails. To play back images one by one in order, you can drag the image over the screen with a finger to browse the collection of photos as you flip over the pages of the book. Max. 16x of enlargement is also operated easily with touches.

The screen brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The 3.0-inch large screen reflects fine details, making it easy to check the focus before shooting. It also serves as a small photo and video viewer, allowing the user and friends to enjoy viewing the still and motion images together.

7. Other Versatile Functions Adding to the Photographic Enjoyment

Although the DMC-FX700 with the iA mode is the camera for every stage of users to be able to take beautiful shots with, it also features manual control for advanced expressive photo shooting. It has A (Aperture Priority) / S (Shutter Speed Priority) / M (Manual Exposure) modes for step up users to enjoy the creative shots depending on the subject or the scene by controlling the shutter speed and aperture. All control is possible via the touch-screen.

Taking advantage of a high speed MOS sensor, newly added Handheld Night Shot mode shoots consecutive 10 shots to simulate over one picture detecting and fixing the position of the subjects. With a short shutter speed, exposure is accumulated while noise is averaged, to produce a blur-less, beautifully illuminated night shot even without using a tripod.

The 1:1 square format is available for photo recording in addition to the conventional aspect ratios of 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9.
