Alexander Atwater Photography Exhibition 2010, Mayfair, London

Through the eyes of a traditional photographer

Alexander Atwater Photography Exhibition 2010

Alexander Morrisson Atwater will show some of his most important works at the Gallery 54 in Shepherd Market in Mayfair, London from Monday, 26th July to Sunday, 1st August 2010.

The exhibition, End Frames, includes striking travel pictures, landscapes and a series of nudes. Its special focus will be on images from Japan, showing traditional Japanese culture in a new light - like Geisha and Sumo wrestlers, but also Tokyo rockabillies.

As a traditional photographer, all of Alexander's images were shot on film and printed by hand. Prints are all available in limited editions and represent various printing techniques from selenium toned prints to traditional silver gelatin prints coloured by hand.

Born in London in 1980, Alexander was brought up in the UK by his Italian mother and American father, but enjoyed travelling and experiencing different cultures from an early age, which is clearly mirrored in his photography. He began his career after university by assisting documentary photographer Alan Gignoux on a project in the Middle East in 2003 and used his own photos from this job for his first exhibition, Beirut to Jerusalem, at the Camera Club in London in 2004. Since then he has been a freelance photographer based in London, specializing mainly in travel photography, portraits and landscapes.

Alexander says about his work: “As a photographer I am self taught. Working in the archives at Magnum photo agency in Paris was the best education for a photographer. This is where all the great image makers of the 20th century passed through. Studying their work helped develop my eye enormously and has inspired a lot of my own work.”

The influences of the great masters can certainly be detected, but Alexander has the ability to transport classic black and white photography into the 21st century and rejuvenate an art form which is frequently overlooked in favour of digital image making.
Limited edition prints are starting at £350 ranging to £2,500 and the exhibition will be open from Monday to Sunday, 10am to 7pm.
