The National Coal Mining Museum announce special photographic display

25 Years On – A photographic display by Andy Boag

The National Coal Mining Museum is proud to announce the launch of a special photographic display by photographer, Andy Boag, entitled ‘25 Years On’, on Sunday 22 November. This FREE display marks the 25th anniversary of the miners’ strike and will be located in the entrance to the underground tour.

The photographs are the result of a project that Andy Boag began while he was studying at the University of Bolton. The aim of the project was to take a number of former miners back to the sites of their collieries which closed shortly after the 1984/5 strike and photograph them.

Andy Boag, said, ‘Many of the sites have been transformed to such an extent that there are no traces of the mines, even to the men who spent much of their working lives there. The pictures illustrate how rapidly the physical traces of a once massive industry have all but been erased from the landscape. In another twenty-five years there will be fewer still.’
The Museum is a fitting venue to exhibit the collection of photographs as a number of the Museum’s Guides are featured in the display.
