Another ultra compact DSLR, the E-450, from Olympus
by Ian Burley

The world's smallest DSLR now gets creative Art Filters and improved image processing

Olympus has introduced a new version of its Four Thirds platform ultra-compact E-420 live view E-System DSLR, and it's called the E-450 and slots between the E-420 and the E-520. The E-4xx line of Olympus DSLRs has claimed the title of the world's smallest and lightest DSLR since the original E-400 was launched two and a half years ago. The E-4xx line is the cheapest part of the E-System DSLR and Olympus' best selling models.

Like the E-420, the E-450 centres around a 10MP Live MOS sensor, and there are no external changes to the E-420 design apart from the inclusion of an Art Filter option on the mode selector knob. Under the hood, an updated version of Olympus' TruePic image processing engine, up to version III+, has been fitted.

As with all the current E-System models, apart from the flagship E-3, the E-450 offers a live view mode that can autofocus using the imaging sensor with selected Four Thirds lenses, and includes face detection. A hybrid AF mode enables live view AF with the rest of the Four Thirds lens range.

Art Filters

Olympus has been busy in recent months and the E-450 is the third new E-System DSLR since the end of last year. A new and surprisingly popular feature of all three new cameras, the other two being the E-30 and E-620, is creative Art Filters. These are an evolution of scene modes that provide specialised image enhancements aimed at artistic creativity rather than simply configuring the camera for certain shooting conditions. The E-450 only provides three Art Filters compared to six each on the other models. The E-450 filters include: Pop Art, which produces a subtle psychedelic colour effect, Pin Hole, which softens the image and adds a vignette, and Soft Focus.

One feature found on all other current E-System DSLRs that you won't find on the E-4xx range, including the E-450, is integrated image stabilisation. There simply isn't enough room in the tiny E-4xx body to house the sensor shift mechanism.

The E-450 will be available from May and its guide price is £450, including the Zuiko Digital 14-45mm (28-90 equivalent) kit lens.
