Royal Photographic Society Anounces Major new Imaging Prize

Young photographer wins £15,000 RPS Jeff Vickers Genix Imaging Bursary

The Royal Photographic Society has announced the first winner of their major new bursary for young photographers – the ‘RPS Jeff Vickers Genix Imaging Bursary’.

Three bursaries, which can be spent on equipment, facilities or travel, are being sponsored by Jeff Vickers FRPS, Chairman of Genix Imaging, in celebration of his 50-year career in the photographic industry.

Each bursary will be worth £5,000 a year for three years – a total £15,000 of financial support. Intended to support professional or aspiring professional commercial photographers, the bursaries are awarded to photographers showing enthusiasm and dedication in their work, together with a flair for imaging and creativity.

Boxing by Philip Volkers

Philip Volkers, winner of the first RPS Jeff Vickers Genix Imaging Bursary, welcomed his award.

“Digital technology has inspired me with new ways to capture and manipulate my vision,” he said. “As with all new technology, however, it is heavily computer reliant and funds are always needed for new hard drives, monitors, software for capturing, processing and retouching photographs. The bursary will greatly benefit my career by enabling me to purchase a high-quality monitor, computer, software and storage drives for the constant flow of new images that I generate.”

Commenting on the bursaries, Jeff Vickers FRPS, said: “I started young in photography, and I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a 50-year career. I know how difficult it can be for young photographers, and I hope these bursaries will inspire and encourage them, and give their careers a flying start.”

Applications for 2009 bursary award
The Society is now inviting applications from photographers aged up to 30, currently working in commercial photographic practice, or who can demonstrate that they will become involved.

Applicants will be asked to provide a portfolio of their work – preferably in electronic form – and a written summary of 500 words on how they anticipate they will spend the bursary and benefit from the award. The closing date for applications is 15.05.09.
