‘LIVERPOOL THROUGH THE LENS’
- Photographs by Edward Chambré Hardman- at The Victoria Gallery & Museum, Liverpool
1 November 2008 – 31 January 2009
A stunning exhibition of images by one of Liverpool’s greatest photographers – Edward Chambré Hardman – takes place in the city later this year part of National Trust celebrations marking Liverpool’s status as European Capital of Culture 2008.
The National Trust, in association with Liverpool University, is exhibiting 56 of Hardman’s original images in the University’s newly restored Victoria Gallery & Museum.
Hardman’s distinctive images in black and white capture moments in Liverpool’s maritime history, the development of its architecture and the daily life of its people during the middle of the last century. They range from the iconic ‘ Birth of the Ark Royal’ to the delicate poise of a young Margot Fonteyn at the start of her career at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1939, and the hubbub of dock life in ‘Overhead Railway and Dock Road’ taken in 1922 when Liverpool was still a thriving, world class port and ‘gateway to the empire’.
‘Liverpool through the Lens’ will be the first major exhibition of Hardman’s work since 1984, when an exhibition at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery proved an overwhelming success.
‘Liverpool Through the Lens’ opens 1 November 2008 – 31 January 2009, Tues – Sat, 10am – 5pm. Admission is free.
