Adobe InDesign CS Arrives With Powerhouse Production Features and New Creative Tools
Professional Page Layout and Design Application Outpaces the Competition With Feature-Packed Full-Version Upgrade
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sept. 29, 2003 - Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced a landmark release of its award-winning layout and design program, Adobe® InDesign® CS. Available as a key component of the Adobe Creative Suite (also announced today) or as a stand-alone software application, InDesign CS delivers powerful production capabilities, creative freedom and cross-media support - enabling customers to design, lay out and print pages, as well as export content to the Web, more rapidly and reliably.
Distancing itself from the competition, InDesign CS takes layout and design to a new level for creative professionals with a wealth of innovative new features.
"InDesign CS is an outstanding release that balances the creativity designers crave, with the robust production capabilities professional publishers demand," said Jim Heeger, senior vice president of Creative Professional Products at Adobe. "In a few short years InDesign has grown into the mature and innovative publishing platform that designers, advertising agencies, magazines, newspapers and service providers are building their businesses around."
Assemble Pages Quickly, Output Confidently
Increased productivity, usability and overall faster performance are evident in every aspect of InDesign CS. Story Editor provides integrated word-processing functionality, making it faster to edit and copy fit text in a design layout. New features, such as the Separations Preview and Flattener Preview palettes enable users to check output on-screen, avoiding costly errors before they appear on film or press. Nested styles simplifies the tedious, error prone task of text formatting, while built-in Document Type Definition (DTD) support for XML validation helps publishers automate
layout tasks and repurpose content more easily. Overall performance also takes a leap forward: zooming, navigating, importing Adobe Photoshop® files, and outputting print and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files are now significantly faster.
Enhance Creative Vision
InDesign CS is built with flexible tools to enable a more fluid design and creative process for designers. Improved workspace management allows designers to customize work areas to fit their own creative workflows through collapsible palettes, named workspaces and the new Control Palette. Collapsible palettes can be tucked along the edge of the window to free up onscreen workspace, while palette locations can be saved as customized workspaces which can be loaded at any time. The new context-sensitive Control Palette efficiently formats text, edits objects and fine-tunes tables in one location on a workspace. A new Stroke Style Editor enables designers to design custom lines and apply them to any stroke. InDesign improves efficiency further with its ability to set up running headers and footers within tables.
"InDesign CS is a creative and production workhorse. This new version offers noticeable performance improvements, new creativity features, and enhancements that make it easier to supply accurate files to various publications, service bureaus, and printers," said Chris Roderick, group director, studio services, Deutsch LA, Inc. "I expect InDesign CS to improve our workflow, further reducing the turnaround time for producing mechanicals and giving our creative staff more time to experiment with new ideas."
Increase Productivity With Adobe Integration
InDesign turbo-charges design productivity through its tight integration with other components in the Adobe Creative Suite. With a common user interface, font handling, color management and keyboard shortcuts, InDesign has a familiar look and similar feel to Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. InDesign also enables designers to easily import and export Adobe PDF files, including support for Acrobat 6.0. InDesign CS features enhanced support for Photoshop with the ability to place and print Photoshop files containing duotones or spot colors. Radically cutting down the time required to create integrated print and Web campaigns, the new Package for GoLive command helps efficiently repurpose InDesign print assets for use on Web sites.
InDesign CS makes it easy to convert from other layout applications, with its ability to open QuarkXPress 3.3-4.1 documents and PageMaker files. In addition Adobe has included a 60 minute professional instruction Video Workshop DVD from Total Training, bringing users quickly up to speed with new InDesign CS features.
Adobe Creative Suite
InDesign CS is a component of the all-new Adobe Creative Suite. The Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition combines full, new versions of Adobe Photoshop CS with ImageReady CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Adobe GoLive CS, and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional and introduces the innovative new Version Cue(tm) file version manager, to easily track iterations and quickly locate files. The Adobe Creative Suite is a complete design solution that gives today's creative professionals everything they need to create and publish content to print and the Web faster, more easily, and more efficiently than ever.
