Release Issued by Sony Ericsson:
UK cameraphone photographer of the year to be celebrated at Sony Ericsson – Newsflash exhibition
From the Heathrow security alerts to the WAG’s partying during the World Cup, 2006 has highlighted the dramatically changing media landscape and the significance the cameraphone has played in capturing the news agenda is to be celebrated in an exhibition at London’s Air Gallery.
Newsflash is a landmark exhibition featuring images taken by the British public that demonstrate how cameraphones are playing an increasingly prominent role in photography and photo-journalism. From a bird’s eye view of a burning church to Jenson Button’s first F1 win; the images truly represent how mobiles are now ‘capturing the moment’.
The exhibition marks the end of a campaign, commissioned by Sony Ericsson in partnership with The Times, which encouraged photographers of all abilities to use their mobile phones to capture images in a bid to win the title of ‘Cameraphone Photographer of the Year - 2006’.
The exhibition will also feature a series of behind-the-scenes shots taken by high profile pundits at major sporting events throughout 2006 including a unique image of Jenson Button winning his first Formula 1 Grand Prix and the England cricket team’s dressing room during the Pakistan Series.
The never seen before images come from: James Allen (Formula1), Nasser Hussain (cricket), Gaby Logan (football), Kenny Logan (rugby), Matthew Hoggard (cricket), Suzi Perry (motorcycle racing), Steve Backley (athletics), Robbie Earle (football), Annabel Croft (tennis) and Kelly Sotherton (athletics).
John Harbur, Managing Director of Sony Ericsson UK and Ireland said, “Cameraphones are not only capturing moments from our daily lives but they are beginning to shape how the media report the news; creating images for all to view through personal blogs and online diaries
“The images from the Newsflash campaign truly reflect the increasing sophistication of the cameraphone and just how exciting capturing the moment has become.”
The Newsflash exhibition will go on to form part of an international global imaging campaign World View with Sony Ericsson, where the UK’s finest example will go head-to-head with winning photographs from 15 countries worldwide including the Netherlands, China and Australia to compete for the coveted title of International Cameraphone Photographer of the Year – a selection of which will be on display at the Newsflash gallery event.
