Canon introduces the CanoScan LiDE 80

Canon introduces the CanoScan LiDE 80: Three world firsts in a super-slim design

Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, is pleased to announce the launch of the CanoScan LiDE 80, its new flagship film-capable scanner. Canon has combined stunning design with three significant technology firsts: The world’s first film capable Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanner, world’s first 2400 x 4800 CIS scanner, and world’s first CIS scanner with FARE automatic film retouching technology. Combining these technologies in a body measuring a mere 38mm in depth, the CanoScan LiDE 80 marks the beginning of a new era in scanning technology and further establishes Canon’s status as a clear market leader.

“The Canon philosophy is to lead the scanner market by consistently pushing the boundaries of technology and style across the entire CanoScan range” explains Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK. “The CanoScan LiDE 80 goes to the heart of that ethic – this is easily the slimmest, most stylish film capable flatbed scanner ever produced.”

A USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface removes the need for messy power cables and adaptors whilst allowing the CanoScan LiDE 80 to perform at four times the speed of traditional USB scanners. A raft of practical software packages – including Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 – all come in the box as standard.

Advanced technology allows stunning design
The CanoScan LiDE 80’s lid is decorated with a distinctive gold aluminium ‘spin-carve’ finish, and the scanner itself is so exceptionally slim and light that a simple stand allows it to be operated and stored on its side. “Canon is confident the outstanding design and tiny footprint of the CanoScan LiDE 80 will appeal to style-conscious users in need of a serious scanner,” said Hills.

Canon has achieved this remarkably thin design by utilising its LED InDirect Exposure (LiDE) technology. LiDE uses a super small, low power LED light source and the integration of lens elements directly onto the scanning sensor to substantially reduce the number and size of individual components needed to produce a scanner. LiDE is the elegant alternative to CCD based scanners, which have limits on minimum size due to the large cathode light source and mirror groups inherent in their design.

Film scratch and dust removal, colour reconstruction
The introduction of FARE level 2 technology - a first for CIS scanners - automatically restores high quality images from damaged and faded originals. Unlike simple software filters, which use intelligent guesswork to locate and repair damage from a scanned image, FARE level 2 uses infra-red scanning of the film itself to precisely locate aberrations. This yields far superior results and saves countless hours of manual retouching. FARE level 2 builds on Canon’s previous FARE and FARE Level 1 dust and scratch removal benefits by incorporating two new features: Grain Equalisation and Management and Reconstruction of Colour for added productivity and even better quality of scans.
The Reconstruction of Colour feature examines originals with faded colour and intelligently resaturates and restores colour balance, reinstating the image to its original pre-faded brilliance. Grain Equalisation and Management smoothes out the effects of film grain recorded and visible at higher scanning resolutions. The resulting images have smoother tones and higher overall quality.

For scanning photo prints, Canon introduces QARE Level 2, an advanced software filter which intelligently checks images for the same defects as FARE Level 2, and corrects them, with a single click.

Highest resolution CIS scanner
By building the world’s first 2400 x 4800 dpi LiDE scanner, Canon’s R&D team have succeeded in elevating CIS scanners into the realm of high-end film capable devices. Until now, this ground-breaking improvement in resolution was thought by many to be technologically impossible. The introduction of an innovative new sensor design, with significantly improved sensitivity, allows for increased resolution without sacrificing image quality. The exceptional sensitivity of the CIS system has also allowed development of a super-compact hand held Film Adapter Unit which uses an LED light source. This adaptor also requires only tiny amounts of power provided by the USB connection, ensuring the LiDE series design and functionality benefits are retained for the CanoScan LiDE 80. Large-scale enlargement of 35mm is now possible, making the CanoScan LiDE 80 suitable for high quality film scanning applications.

Built for speed
With its USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Interface, the CanoScan LiDE 80 scans four times faster than traditional USB devices. The efficiency of LiDE technology also allows the CanoScan LiDE 80 to draw its tiny power requirements from the USB connection, eliminating the need for messy AC power cables. In addition, the corrective FARE scan process has been improved from a two pass to a single pass operation, further improving the speed and productivity of the CanoScan LiDE 80.

EZ buttons
Four EZ buttons allow for easy selection of copy, scan, filing and e-mailing functions. These programmable buttons allow frequently used operations to be automated into a single step, including functions such as ‘Scan to PDF’, which generates PDF files direct from paper originals.

Software and compatibility
The CanoScan LiDE 80 comes bundled with a suite of powerful and fully featured PC/Mac software:
• Adobe PhotoShop Elements 2.0 – imaging software for advanced photo enhancement and manipulation.
• Comprehensive driver and toolbox software - The CanoScan toolbox reduces complex functions down to a simple click on a menu bar icon. For example, the Fast MultiPhoto function automatically creates individual files from a number of photographs scanned in a single pass.
• ArcSoft PhotoStudio and PhotoBase - image-editing program allowing tasks such as colour adjustment, labelling, and album storage and retrieval functions.
• Omnipage SE OCR – powerful Optical Character Recognition application allows scanned text to be converted into recognisable text characters/data.
• NewSoft Presto! Pagemanager (Win) – scans documents to PDF format and automates creation and management of resulting document database.
• Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0
The CanoScan LiDE 80 is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP as well as Mac OS9.0 and OS X (v10.1.3 or later Native mode).
