Sandisk CF cards get faster

Sandisk, the inventor if the Compact Flash card, has announced a high performance ‘Ultra’ product family of cards that will sell alongside the familiar standard Sandisk product line.

Sandisk ‘Ultra’ cards are aimed at users, especially digital camera users, who could benefit from faster CF card read/write performance. Ultra cards are promised to deliver sustained data rates of around 2.8MB/second, more than twice as fast as standard cards, according to SanDisk.

Earlier this year I interviewed a senior product manager at Sandisk Europe who warned that some third party CF card manufacturers were risking incompatibility by tweaking their designs to eak out faster data rates. Lexar, for example, has traditionally differentiated its CF cards through claimed superior speed.

Although my contact at Sandisk was, at the time, unconcerned that speed was a marketing issue for CF cards, with next-generation flash memory now available in quantity, performance improvements are almost a by product.
