New sub-£100 Samsung Web/digicam

It’s called the Samsung Digimax 50 Duo and it’s a combined digital camera and Web cam. Its digital camera mode resolution is just 640x480, but it’s priced at under £100.

The formula of a USB-connected Web cam that can be detached and used as a digital camera in its own right is not new. However, too many of these fail to include a built in flash. This isn’t so with the Samsung Digimax 50 Duo. The rest of its specification is quite modest. There is no zoom lens or adjustable focussing, let alone autofocus, but exposure and white balance settings are automatic. There is no viewscreen LCD.

In Web cam mode the 50 Duo can stream up to 30 frames per second. In digital camera mode it has 8MB of integrated memory that is good for around 240 still photos. Software supplied can turn your snaps into panoramas and even animations. It sounds like a decent stocking filler to me...
