Canon has produced a new high-end film scanner, the 4000ppi (pixels per inch) CanoScan FS4000US.
Using a new 3 line CCD sensor, a considerably higher maximum resolution than the existing sole Canon model, the 2700ppi CanoScan FS2710 can be achieved. Colour density is rated at 42 bits.
At 4000ppi, the CanoScan FS4000US can deliver 21.4 megapixels covering a conventional 24x36mm 35mm format film frame. Like the FS2710, you don’t have to pay extra for an APS format adapter. Both SCSI and USB connections are catered for.
Another novel feature of the FS4000US is a new scratch and dust removal system called FARE (Film Automatic Retouching & Enhancement). This uses an infra red scan pass to identify physical imperfections. These are then dealt with locally, without adversely affecting the surrounding image quality.
While the old FS2710 remains a good product, the FS4000US is a significantly improved scanner that should be able to mix it with the best of the competition from Nikon, Minolta, Microtek and others. It’s priced £699 inc.VAT.
