    Scanners

Canon is only introducing two new scanners today, the entry-level N640P and the high-speed D1250U2F.

    D1250U2F

Technically the more interesting of the two, the 2400x1200ppi D1250U2F is the first Canon scanner to employ USB2.0 connectivity. We actually carried news of the Japanese launch of the D1250U2F back in October (click here)

In the UK the D1250U2F will be supplied with an Adaptec USB2.0 PCI card as standard. It’s a shame the extra cost will be forced on some buyers who may already have invested in a USB2.0 solution. But at £169 inc.VAT, the D1250U2F isn’t going to break the bank.

The D1250U2F includes a lid-mounted illuminator for film and slide scanning as standard. The less expensive D1250U2, which does without film scanning capability, is not on the Canon UK product list.

    N640P EX

At £69 inc.VAT, the N640P EX joins the Canon N670U as the cheapest scanner in the Canon line up. It’s a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) type scanner instead of a conventional optical scanner. This enables the design to be very slim and compact. Resolution is 600x1200ppi. Unlike its more expensive CIS Canon stablemates, the N640P EX isn’t powered via the USB port – in fact it’s a parallel port only scanner. And there is no snazzy vertical stand. There are no external one touch function buttons either.

This is a basic scanner, after all. But bundled with hardware are the software titles ScanSoft OmniPage Pro 9.0, ScanGear Toolbox – for scanning to fax, email, copier, etc. and ArcSoft PhotoStudio.
