It had been rumoured that Nikon’s distinctive swivel body design, popularised in the CoolPix 900-series digicams, had come to the end of the line with the current 995 model. Not so, says Nikon by announcing the CoolPix 2500.

The swivel philosophy has been modernised and instead of literally the whole of one half of the camera body turning, an inner section containing the lens swivels. This ‘inner swivel’, as Nikon calls it, looks more robust as the rotating section section is, effectively, contained in a frame with the pivot mounted on two sides instead of one (see pictures).

Nikon, which tends to be associated more with its professional products, is keen to emphasise the ‘fun’ factor in the CoolPix range and the 2500 is suitably attired in a silver and blue design.

Not so exciting is the new camera’s relatively low resolution 2 megapixel sensor. However, the camera is fitted with a 3x optical zoom, has a long life rechargeable lithium battery and there are a number creative control shooting modes to choose from. This even includes a ‘museum mode’ that does its best to take good photos with the flash switched off.

Nikon has also announced the creation of a dedicated Web site for CoolPix camera users. It can be found at:

www.nikon-coolpix.com

And it has a very cute animation on the front page - if you like that sort of thing!
