The long-rumoured replacement for Canon’s EOS D30 digital SLR has been unveiled at last. Launched 18 months ago, the Canon D30 has, along with Fujifilm’s S1-Pro, represented the more affordable end of the ‘classic’ style digital SLR market. The replacement announced today, the Canon EOS D60, builds on the D30’s strengths and addresses some of its weaknesses.

The D30’s unique 3 megapixel CMOS sensor drew a lot of praise for its excellent colour reproduction and low noise. So it was very surprising to find that the recently launched Canon EOS-1D pro camera had reverted to CCD technology. But the D60 remains faithful to CMOS and resolution has been pumped up from 3 megapixels to 6 megapixels. Image resolution is 3072x2048, or 6.3MP. However, the chip remains the same physical size, so the infamous 60% focal length shift effect seen on the D30 remains.

Some have been critical of the D30’s low light autofocus capability and Canon has responded by increasing the AF sensor sensitivity. The three focussing points are now illuminated red on focussing screen when active. Another low light improvement has been enabled by modified signal processing that precludes the need for noise reduction on exposures shorter than 30 seconds. Like its big sibling, the EOS-1D, you can now record RAW and JPEG versions of pictures simultaneously.

Disappointing some is the news that connectivity with a host computer remains USB 1.1 instead of being upgraded to USB 2.0 or even Firewire. There is no change to continuous shooting speed, which remains 3 frames per second and can be sustained for 8 frames.

Apple OS X users should be cheered to hear that Canon is promising software compatibility for their chosen platform.

The Canon D60 is expected to start shipping towards the end of March, though no price has yet been revealed in the UK.
