Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition (no.12)

Andrew Thatcher - It just sums up everyday life for a lot of people all over the world, everyone I speak to goes on about the traffic and the drive to and from work, also since I have been unable to drive for a while, when getting back to 'everyday life' I found that driving has become one of the main things I do and being able to do it I feel free again.
The picture really is worth a thousand words.....

Congratulations Andrew, in my honest opinion, a terrific image,

First, a big thank you to Stu for taking the time to comment on everyones photo, I'm sure people appreciate the effort. Secondly, I'm really glad you chose Andrews pic as the winner, it was the one I would have gone for too.

Thirdly, congrats to Andrew for winning the Salon. I loved the image from the outset, and think it was brilliantly conceived and produced. Can't imagine what you are going to come up with for the next time, but I can't wait

Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition (no.12)

Wow thanks Stu you made my everyday life think you had a hard choice as the are some great images in the salon this time. Now im going to have to think up a Salon theme and thanks everyone for all the kind words about the image.
For the people that want to know how i took the shot. My original idea was to shoot a story board with me driving to work in the daylight and home again in the dark. Was unsure if multiple photos was a no no in the rules plus the daylight ones where a bit weak, so just picked what i thought was the night shot that stood out the most. I set the tripod up in the back of the car wedged against the back and front seats. Set it at 2sec shutter and f8. Trying to take the photo myself while driving was going to be a big no, even with a cable release id have to take my hand off the wheel. So i set the D200 to take a shot every 20 secs that way id get a steady set of shots with a blur of lights.

Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition (no.12)

Congratulations Andrew, I also wanted to try for a shot like that but we don't have enough lights around here, Mind you mine was going to be for experimentation not to enter here. I guess living out in the sticks does have its disadvantages.

Thank you for yor lovely comment on my entry Goatsmilk, It is appreciated. I am blessed enough to have a commute of about 30 seconds so I spend some time with the dogs and my camera

Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition (no.12)

Firstly let me apologise for not thanking Stu for all his hard work in commenting and judging this salon, when I congratulated Andrew.

Secondly, here was his comment about my entry:

"Autumn - I like this but I would love it if there had been people on each balcony chatting across to each other, I can imagine that happening everyday."

So I have looked a few out and here they are:-

This was taken in downtown Havana. You can see two boys talking on the balcony.

Here is a closeup of the same 2 boys

Here are 2 women having a good chat over the balcony

Fantastic Audrey, just how I imagined it !

We were miles from Havana over in Guardalavaca and never saw any built up areas such as those in the pics, we did visit a town that had some life but I can't recall the name right now. Havana looks like a vibrant place to be.

Stu

Re: Fortnightly Salon Competition (no.12)

It's certainly vibrant. We found it very expensive and the food was terrible unless you went into a decent hotel and paid the earth.

We stayed in Old Havana and it looked like Sheffield after the blitz!

Nobody puts a lick of paint on their houses or apartments. Our tour guide told us it was because they thought it was the Council's responsibility. The place is crumbling, although one or two places were being restored. Of course there is a new part, which is like any modern city anywhere.

I must say, the transport is archaic. I will sort some of the old cars out and post them in a separate thread.

The music was good and there are little bands in all the bars and hotels. They are very talented. However, you cannot have a meal or a drink without a basket being thrust under your nose for you to put "Something in for the band" together with the fact that they also wanted you to buy their cds. Of course it did all add to the colour.
