Wink Abnormal Japan - another evidence

I know this is a place for discussing about dSLR but let me post it here.

************

Japan is abnormal as some of you have been firmly and continuously believing. Here's another example.
I'm of the opinion that the nuke plant explosion caused this.
What? No? Even before that? --- I would not deny it.
anyway ...

The shipment of "non-reflex" cameras occupies more than half (50.3%) of all interchangeable lens cameras in the 4th Q of 2011, while in case of other areas it's only a quater (24.0%). --- in terms of units (see the 1st chart attached)

The 2nd chart shows the same but annalyzed regional-wise. For instance, in Europe non-reflex has 18.7% share and in North America, 16.4%. World wide share was 22.7% in the second half of 2011.

Incidentally CIPA, an organization collecting statistics of camera shipment, says they intend to use the word "non-reflex" to cover so-called mirror-less models, compact system cameras, range finder cameras when lens is interchangeable and interchangeable "unit" cameras such as a Ricoh model.

This is for their statistics purpose only and of course does not force manufacutures to follow. They continuously use their own naming such as " micro single lens", " mirror-less single lens" ... whatever.

CIPA estimates that camera shipment this year will increase by 1.6% (117.3 mil. units including 99 mil. non-interchangeable lens cameras = so called comapact cameras)
The compact cameras will decline by 0.8% compared to the previoius year. The interchangeable-lens camera is estimated to increase by 16.6% and reaches to 18.3 mil. units.

P.S. They use wording such as shipment "to Japan" and "to other regions" as most cameras are manufactured outside of Japan. Japan is an importer, of course.

Forgot to mention that the third chart shows a comparison between 2010 and 2011 shipment.

I suspect there are regular butt kicking sessions in the Canon headquarters...

For those that said there was no market for this format, the amount of egg on their face must be considerable.

I have similar data too. The US seems to be reluctant to embrace mirror-less system cameras, as do parts of Europe, but the UK is one of the best countries for CSC sales outside of Japan, while Asian markets like CSCs too.

Basically big trends like this tend to start in Japan and then spread to other markets in a couple of years.

Re: Abnormal Japan - another evidence

The last paragraph was corrected from "non-reflex" to "interchangeable-lens camera".

Butt kicking sessions? - interesting! I doubt whether Canon has such sophisticated business review sessions. Should be introduced at their next shareholder meeting, though. They can expect more attendance of shareholders for sure.

Hi, Ian,
it represents one interpretation of the data, for sure. I personally agree with your prediction, too. CSC will grow.

I still think on the other hand that there must be something peculiar to Japanese market. (I do not intend to offend CSC in any sense. I have personally interests in CSC. What I'm writing here is simply out of my curiosity, as the statistic contradicts my personal experiences. A third? ok. But now more than half? really? )

There are so many aged, stubborn and loyal photographers who like dSLR's so much. There are even lots of film camera fans here. They are surviving at the moment. I rarely see them using a mirroless camera in the field. Maybe I should say, I have never observed them using a CSC in the field so far.

This is a rapidly aging country. The majority of people are aged ones. If youger people buy two or three CSC's, then I understand it... Smart phones and games are more popular among young people than a camera, I would say.

Here again, aged people are usually wealthier than the youger ones who have even difficulities in permanent-job-finding under the current economic situation.

True, my observation is limited to landscapers. Landscapers must be slow in adopting modern technologies.

Just my personal impression after reading the news.

Re: Abnormal Japan - another evidence

After writing the above, one more point comes to my mind.

The CIPA statistics are shipment data and not sales data like BCN.
So my hunch is that manufacturers can ship regardless of actual sales quantity.

Does anybody think this is the background of the "peculiarity"?
I'm simply asking and not insisting.
