That is stunning, regardless of what was used to take it, Pat.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

My father passed away on Tuesday just before his 98th birthday. I flew to Charleston, SC and was joined by my oldest daughter and family. We had many family reunions at Folly Beach over the years so it seemed natural to visit it again. I was traveling with only a carry-on so my iPhone X was all I had to take shots like this moonrise. A tripod would have helped.

My Grandsons love visiting the Aircraft Carrier Yorktown in Charleston.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

My Google Phone (the LG Nexus 5X) has definitely seen better days, so I've been on the lookout for a new phone for a couple of months and was very interested to see Ian's testing of the P20. Then the P30 lite came out, and I seriously considered that - but it was very hard to find much information.

Then the Pixel 3A was announced: I'd hankered after the Pixel but it was way out of my price range. I've been on a SIM only contract for some time and the cost of the contracts was extortionate. I was umming and ahing as to whether to take the plunge, then saw a trade-in in the window of the local Cash Converters (for those not in the UK, a pawn shop) yesterday - and not a bad price.

I've used the Lightroom app to take photos before, but have never been terribly impressed with the results when using the Nexus.

The first image is straight out of camera(phone) and downloaded from Google Photos as is.

The second, while still taken with the native phone, was added into the Lightroom mobile app then synced with the PC. I have edited this one (the original was very flat) and was also able to have a go at cloning out the distracting log in the foreground - I think I could do better in Lightroom itself. I don't usually bother taking phone photos into Lightroom CC itself though - the lite version is enough in most cases.

Whilst the Pixel only has one camera rather than the 3 (4?) on the Huawei and is only 12mb, I was quite pleased with the results.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

We're back in South Carolina. I grabbed this shot with the 2X lens of my iPhone X. I call the seagulls Jonathan and Livingston.

Amazing, Caz. The quality from a phone is better than some of my earlier cameras !

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

Thanks Garry - I've been seriously impressed with the camera function on this phone.

I was down in Gloucester 10 days ago watching Nile Rodgers with Chic but didn't have a photopass so only took my small Canon EOS-M (it's the Mark 1, the one that people say doesn't focus) with a 22mm f2 lens and I also used my phone for a few shots. Most of the phone shots were too far away (I've noticed that the "zoom" isn't that great). Unfortunately I can't put these on my website (or pass them to the media company) as it might jeopardise getting passes in the future.

The first one's with my camera - a fair crop due to wide angle lens I had on

Phone shot, virtually straight out of "camera"

There were also a lot when the camera phone didn't cope due to lack of light, but the camera itself was never set higher than ISO400 all evening.

Thank you Garry - I went to see Nile Rodgers again this weekend when he played at the local rugby stadium (Franklins Gardens, Northampton). This time neither of us were working so didn't take a camera at all, just the phone.

Taken yesterday with iPhone X. Unedited.

This is an example of a Watercolor post processing app called Waterlogue.

The unedited photo of the Swallowtail butterfly is as good as a lot of edited photos I have seen, Pat

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

I frequently use Google's free Snapseed post processing app. The HDR-Scape filter really makes clouds pop. I tend to overuse it. Here's a before and after example from the golf course last night.
