Filters

I have been a shutterbug all my adult life. Mostly taking macros. Recently I have received 12 colored filters and 12 gradient filters. Since I have never used these before can any one tell me what the different colors are for besides enhancing their respective colors?

Many colour filters were generally for use with black and white film; yellow, for example, darkens blue skies and red filters minimise haze. Blue filters are used with daylight film to counteract the warmth of indoor lighting (incandescent bulbs). Neutral dark filters could be neutral density for darkening the scene or polarising (can also be used to reduce brightness) - useful for cutting through reflections on the surface of water or windows, etc.

Gradient filters are used frequently even with digital cameras for darkening the sky in order to avoid either blown highlights in the sky when exposing for the foreground.

Are the filters sheet types or in mounts for screw-in lens filter threads?

They are the sheet filters with an adapter to screw on my lens

Just to clarify - are these 'gel' filters (flexible plastic) or solid square filters?

If you know what the actual colours/tones are I can explain what they can be used for in more detail

I tried to post a pic of the filters. But this forum won't let me. I have dark blue, green, yellow, red, four shades of grey, pink, orange, and purple. The gradient are pretty much the same colors.
These are glass approx 2.5 x 3 inches

I just realised you possibly tried to post an image by attachming it to your post.

This message board doesn't accept attachments. The way to display an image in your posting is to upload the image to your gallery them insert the code from below the image into your form posting.

You automatically have free gallery space and the way to access it is to click on 'galleries' then click on 'upload images' on the right side of the banner within your gallery. There are instructions for using the gallery at this link :-

Images of approximately 800-850 pixels wide are ideal. Maybe approximately 250-300k is also ideal.
