These elusive birds breed in small numbers on my local patch (a tertiary treatment reed bed for a sewage works) but larger numbers come in from the Continent during the Winter. During a late afternoon visit today I heard at least 9 birds squealing and saw just two. They are very wary so the only way to get a photo is to stand as still as possible and wait until one comes out into the open, very briefly. Always exciting to get an image of one of these small reed bed dwellers, this is the best of the six I managed to capture all in a very shady area.

Terrific shot. I have never seen one for real.
