Bokeh with distant subject.

I'm getting on ok with my camera...I'm fine with bokeh ( see pic). Q. if I focus on a distant subject say, 50m away....there will be a sharp area in front and behind the subject? ( 1/3 in front...2/3 behind)....but no bokeh occurs....or is it so slight to be seen? I guess the the large distance involved has some effect. Any help appreciated.
I notice that pros. manage this when capturing sportsmen ,say, on football pitch.

One of the easiest ways to work out what happens at different focal distance is to use a DoF/Hyperfocal calculator:

One reason the so called "Pros" get more OOF backgrounds is the use of very long lenses on a camera with a bigger sensor. But don't discount post processing
