  • Gitzo's new high-tech ball head

To kick off a dedicated board for discussion of anything to do with supports, including tripods, monopods, heads and lighting supports, here is a picture of Gitzo's new high-tech quick-release ball head.

The ball is extra large, which helps avoid slippage and reduces that annoying effect where tightening the head changes the position of the view, especially with telephoto lenses. To keep the head light, the ball is hollow, made by machining two parts and then forming them into one - a process that Gitzo is jealously guarding.

The head is teflon coated for smooth operation and requires no grease lubrication. The locking mechanism uses a special material - rather like car brake pads, with a carefully shaped profile, that locks the ball progressively using a large and very comfortable to use locking/adjust knob.

The new Gitzo heads won't be cheap (prices aren't yet available) but for a professional, from our experience briefly using one, it will be a worthwhile investment for many who depend heavily on their tripod for shooting with big and heavy camera and lens combinations.
