Panasonic unveils the LUMIX GX800: A sleek and stylish camera with advanced selfie and panorama shoot function technology
Compact System Camera (CSC) Featuring 4K PHOTO and 4K Video Recording
Panasonic is today launching the ultimate high performance compact mirrorless camera – the LUMIX GX800 – which offers great image quality for those who want to capture amazing scenery and unmissable moments. The DC-GX800 offers newly integrated 4K PHOTO and 4K Video all in a sleek, stylish compact body.
The 3.0-inch 1040K-dot static touch control screen boasts a 180-degree tiltable structure and the camera goes into Self Shot mode automatically once the monitor is flipped. In Self Shot mode, a variety of functions for selfies are available on the LUMIX GX800, including a newly-added 4K Selfie mode. Users can also choose to capture the background clearly or defocused depending on the situation with the new Background Control mode. Panorama pictures can also be shot in Self Shot mode.
The 16.0-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor without low-pass filter and the new Venus Engine combine to achieve crisp, high-resolution images in fine details with high-contrast, impressive colour reproduction and maximum ISO 25600 high sensitivity.
The LUMIX GX800 records smooth, high-resolution QFHD 4K videos in 3840×2160 resolution at 30p/25p(50Hz Area) or 24p in MP4. Taking advantage of 4K technology, users can also enjoy 4K PHOTO shots and a variety of derivative functions, such as Focus Stacking, Post Focus and Light Composition.
For more creative freedom, Creative Control, Creative Panorama and Photo Style including L.Monochrome mode are included. The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode and Scene Guide make LUMIX GX800 easy to use. The camera integrates Wi-Fi® connectivity to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation.
Capture unmissable photo opportunities with cutting-edge 4K technologies and stunning performance
The LUMIX GX800 is capable of recording smooth, high-resolution 4K videos yet despite its high performance, it boasts superior energy-efficiency within a compact design.
Thanks to this 4K technology, users can also experience 4K PHOTO to capture fleeting photo opportunities at 30 fps by extracting the frame with the best timing out of a 4K burst file to save as a photo. In 4K PHOTO, three modes can be chosen from depending on the situation; 4K Burst, 4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 4K Pre-burst. All of these functions in 4K PHOTO let the user save pictures in 8-megapixel equivalent high-resolution, which is good enough for printing in A3 size. A maximum of 150 frames in five seconds following a designated frame can be saved.
The LUMIX GX800 also comes with a Post Focus function that lets users select the focus area after shooting. This function was developed by combing the high-speed, high-precision DFD (Depth from Defocus) auto focus technology and 4K technology.
Achieve true-to-life detail and impressive colour reproduction
The LUMIX GX800 lets users shoot vibrant, true-to-life high-quality images with excellent resolution, high contrast and impressive colour reproduction. By removing the low-pass filter, the limiting resolution has been improved. The Venus Engine reproduces vibrant, impressive colours for images such as clear skies by dividing the hue, saturation and luminosity, and finely adjusting them separately. The combination of the Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine achieves clear image rendering with minimum noise, even in low-lit situations.
The Contrast AF System features DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology and excels in both speed and accuracy by exchanging digital signals between the camera and the lens at a maximum of 240 fps, resulting in ultra-fast auto focusing of approx. 0.07 sec.
The LUMIX GX800 will be available from March 2017 in Silver, Black, Tan and Orange and will RRP at £499.99.

California start-up gambles on $99 a month camera as a service offering
Not since the Pentak K-01, almost five years ago, have I seen anything quite as bizarre as the Relonch 291 camera; a $99 a month camera. But in this day and age being bizarre is not necessarily an indicator of guaranteed failure. As we know only too well from this year, it’s been difficult to predict winners, no matter how bizarre. However, the Pentax K-01 was both bizarre and a failure.
But back to the camera, or should that be the service? If you go for the Relonch 291 you will be, in one way, getting the camera for free. Instead you will be paying $99 per month for the service that the camera is entirely dependent on. That service is called Pictured Technology. It receives all your photos via an LTE (4G) mobile data connection. It then automatically massages them into shape digitally. In theory, you get an online portfolio of perfect photos without going anywhere near image processing software. To manage your account and view your photos you will use a Relonch app.
Pictured Technology image processing is, we’re told, clever enough to convert camera images like that on the left into results like that on the right
Simplicity is the name of the game here. The camera, appears to be a re-purposed Samsung Galaxy NX disguised in a stitched leather jacket. It has only one button; the shutter release, apart from the power switch. There is no rear screen (one of the more striking features of the Galaxy NX which had a massive 4.8 inch LCD). Thankfully, there is an electronic viewfinder and, if our hunch is correct, like the Samsung Galaxy NX, it will be an SVGA 800×600 pixel affair, which isn’t really cutting edge any more. The Galaxy NX also sported a 20 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor which is, presumably, shared with the Relonch 291.
A noticeable aspect of the launch news is the dearth of technical information about the hardware. It may be that Relonch aren’t keen to dwell on a set of specifications that betrays the camera’s three year old bones. That word, ‘bones’, is pretty apt, too, since the Galaxy NX was a commercial failure. Samsung, itself, killed off its camera division two years later. It doesn’t look like you can change lenses, which you could with the NX. In fact without any obvious controls it also appears that the Relonch 291 doesn’t even have a zoom lens.
Clearly, Relonch are gambling on the 291 becoming a must-have style accessory, a high-tech-low-tech fashion icon. The target audience has been identified as those who would like good photos but not have to think about the technical side of making them good. What we have here is a camera that should deliver much better quality photos than a smartphone, with even more simplicity. In many ways it will work like a smartphone camera, sending images to the cloud but your $99 a month pays for the premium photo processing service that Pictured Technology is being portrayed as being. Whether or not the extreme simplicity of the camera itself will be a hindrance or not remains to be seen. But Relonch have really taken ‘point-and-shoot” to its extreme.
Tell us what you think of the Relonch 291 and if it could tempt you to sign up for $99 a month.
Press release issued by Relonch:
Relonch Camera-as-a-Service Lets Members Have Remarkable Photos
World’s first camera-as-a-service model aims to deliver an experience that will make you reconsider how you capture everyday moments
PALO ALTO, CALIF., December 13, 2016 — Today, Relonch unveiled its camera-as-a-service at the company’s showroom located in the heart of Silicon Valley on downtown Palo Alto’s main drag. With the press of a single button, Relonch 291 takes photos that automatically upload to Relonch’s server over LTE for processing and distribution. This simple sequence solves for what Relonch refers to as the “chain of pain” associated with producing professional-looking images. You won’t need to fuss with confusing camera settings, tedious file downloads, manual image sorting and laborious photo editing.
“There’s nothing valuable about owning a camera that collects dust on the shelf or that you don’t know how to use” said Relonch co-founder Yuri Motin. “Our aim is to eliminate the countless complications associated with photography so we chose to create the camera as a service model rather than just hardware or software. Our service gives members the ability to solely focus on the experience, on the moment itself.”
Do you want to try it? Sign up for a three-day test drive by visiting the showroom. If you’re already a believer, register online to become a member. The service will be available globally in 2018 and includes:
a camera that is preset to take great photos;
an algorithm-based approach to developing photos called Pictured Technology; and
a mobile application for receiving and storing your Relonch images.
CEO and co-founder of Relonch Sergey Korzhenevich explains, “Even high-end cameras tend to disappoint most people because pictures rarely capture what they actually saw. Relonch members could be camera savvy but don’t need to be because our preset camera and Pictured Technology takes care of everything.”
Pictured Technology is the Relonch approach to photo processing. Every object within a frame is processed independently based on the company’s professionally edited photo stacks and algorithms. Members will see a great difference between Relonch photos and ones where you apply a single filter to the entire photo. Given that lighting conditions are factored into the algorithms, photos actually look like what you pictured.
“The nuances associated with capturing outstanding photos make it hard for average photo enthusiasts to find true satisfaction. We know that will change if they switch to our camera-as-a-service model,” added co-founder Nikolay Babich. “All you need to do is believe that you can take remarkable photos of your everyday life and find value in the simplicity of our process—one-click, automatic upload, and next-day delivery of photos.”
The Relonch mobile application is where you’ll receive your processed photos. You’ll no longer need to sift through thousands of raw image files to find the best ones. Relonch will select and process your photos for you. Each morning, Relonch will directly deliver your best photos to the Relonch app. In addition, members will be able to select their favorite photo of the day to create a personal collection of your best 365 images, highlighting your life’s best moments over the course of the year.
Founded in New York City, Relonch, Inc. is reinventing the photography experience with the world’s first camera-as-a-service. Relonch has reduced the complexity of professional photography to a single shutter button. See more on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or in person at the company’s showroom.

Firmware update 2.2 for Leica SL with improved support for Leica Image Shuttle software and Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens – available today
Leica Camera has released Firmware Update 2.2 for the Leica SL mirrorless system camera, improving support for the Mac versions of Leica Image Shuttle 3.5 and Tethered Plug-in 1.1.0., as well as supporting the new Microsoft Windows version of Leica Image Shuttle 3.5.
Registered Leica SL owners can download the new software and firmware updates from the Leica Owners’ Area (https://owners.leica-camera.com) or take their camera to their local Leica Store or Leica Customer Care in the UK for a complimentary installation.
Leica Image Shuttle 3.5 improves workflow efficiency for tethered shooting with the Leica SL and allows the camera to be controlled from a computer via a USB 3.0 cable connection. All relevant exposure parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, ISO value and autofocus can be set and controlled from the computer, and exposures can be displayed directly on a large monitor screen for assessment.
The Leica Tethered Plug-in 1.1.0 (for Mac) – also available as a download from the Leica Owners’ Area – establishes a direct connection between the Leica SL and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 / CC for Mac via USB cable. The camera’s shutter release can be activated from the plug-in and the images captured can be displayed directly in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 / CC (for Mac), making the workflow even faster and more reliable. The corresponding firmware update is required for the use of Leica Image Shuttle and the Leica Tethered Plug-in.
Firmware update 2.2 also removes the shutter speed limitation when shooting with 6-bit coded Leica M-Lenses, while further optimising the performance of the Leica SL system.
Available from today, the Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. is the first prime lens for the Leica SL-System and sets a new standard in its class. Its large maximum aperture makes this high-performance lens ideal for photography in challenging lighting conditions, and enables the use of shallow depth of focus as a creative tool. Furthermore, the fast, precise and reliable autofocusing ensures that photographers can concentrate fully on composition and creativity. The lens’ combination of resolving power and soft bokeh in unsharp areas clearly isolates subjects from their background, particularly when shooting at maximum aperture.
Accessory Lenses Now Also Compatible with iPhone 7 Family
New ‘Edge’ bracket available at camera speciality stores beginning at the end of January 2017
The three accessory lenses with the new family name ExoLens®1) PRO with Optics by ZEISS are now also compatible with the iPhone®2) 7 family. “We can now confirm the compatibility of the existing accessory lenses for the entire iPhone® 7 family in addition to the iPhone® 6 family,” says Michael Schiehlen, Senior Director of Sales, Marketing and Service in the Camera Lenses division at ZEISS. “The ExoLens PRO with Optics by ZEISS accessory lenses work exclusively with the wide-angle camera on the iPhone®3) 7 Plus. All existing lenses are generally compatible with the iPhone® 7 Plus, but due to the built-in 2X telephoto camera on the device, we recommend using the ExoLens PRO Wide-Angle and Macro-Zoom with the iPhone® 7 Plus primarily,” explains Oliver Schindelbeck, Product Manager at ZEISS. “The technology for these accessory lenses has not changed. The addition of ‘PRO’ to ‘Optics by ZEISS’ is just an enhanced product name to better distinguish it from ExoLens’ own PRIME line,” explains Schiehlen.
The new Edge bracket
The new and compact Edge bracket, which is mounted on the corner of the smartphone, will be available at camera specialty stores beginning at the end of January 2017. The bracket also features a cold shoe mount for attaching additional accessories such as external light sources. “An extra small key ring loop hole makes it possible to affix the mounting solution to a keychain when it’s not being used,” says Schindelbeck.

The new iPhone® 7 bracket package is now available at camera specialty stores. It also contains inlays for the iPhone® 6 and 6s. The bracket also features an integrated standard tripod mount and a cold shoe mount.
