Printer comparison: gamut charts

The black trace in the centre of the colour region represents the colour gamut or range of colour that the printer is capable of reproducing. This trace is determined by the quality of the inks, the printer’s colour algorithms and the reflectivity of the paper on which the test print is created.

Clearly, both the Canon S800 and the Epson Stylus 895 have markedly superior colour gamuts than the Lexmark Z43 or the HP psc-950. It’s interesting to not the uneven trace produced by the HP. This may be a result of the extra colour dithering routines required by the HP’s limit of three colour inks compared to 5 colours for the other printers.

This should mean the Canon and Epson printers are capable of greater depth and density of colour, to give more vibrant and natural looking results.
