We’ve already established that this printer is unrivalled for features. Nothing else combines a roll paper feed option and integrated paper cutter as well as a direct CD printing option. And those features are backed up by print quality that we are confident to say is new the benchmark for dye-based ink-jet photo printing. Only one ingredient is missing from the recipe and that’s speed. Having got used to A4 prints in just over a minute with Canon’s S900, the thumb twiddling for seven minutes waiting for the same size print using the Epson 950 is not funny. Maybe a production printer will be faster - we’ll just have to wait and see. One other ‘feature’ that needs a quick mention is printer set up. The Epson 950 initial head alignment takes for ever. OK, half an hour. But that’s about 25 minutes longer than it should. The process requires feeding through one sheet of paper three times and it’s easy to mess things up by pressing ‘next’ out of sequence, forcing you to wait for the lengthy process to complete before you can start again. But in the right perspective, the incredible versatility and print quality of the Epson Stylus 950 Photo alone make it a remarkable printer that requires very serious consideration.
