Scary! Can you tell us a little about how you came to be in a position to 'snap' this?

we were doing a kelp dive close to cape town, looking for seven gill sharks. didn't see any of those, however smiler here turned up - which kinda explained why there were no 7 gills around.

nah, only joking.

it was a cage dive with mike rutzen's firm, shark diving unlimited, taken at dyer island - aka the great white capital of the world - in may 2009. the great white's pay absolutely no interest in the divers in the can as they follow the towed tuna heads.
for my shots, i had the camera (hence arms and hands) outside of the cage so as to not get any bars in the way. was lucky enough to have a GWS brush along my arm and hand at one point as it passed in front of the cage. that was pretty cool. you may find it hard to believe, but i find diving with sharks incredibly relaxing....this was no exception.

the cage diving itself is about as safe as it can be and i'd recommend it to anyone, if only to get a healthy respect for these magnificent animals.

so, if you find yourself in cape town, drive 100 miles east to a place called gansbaai and hook up with mike's operation. it really is an experience not to be missed.
