I don't do critique as most know.

I like what I see though and you have captured it perfectly I feel especially with the sunlight catching the window arch.

I think the proportions of the image and lighting are spot on, but architechture should be sharp in detail and this is not.

I think the "medium" rendering on the gallery looks soft. If you go to the gallery and open up the large image, you will see it is sharp!

I'd agree with you Andy it is sharp on the large version, its maybe a case of the gallery software letting you down. Your large version is 1000px high and you have already had to compress it a fair bit. The medium version is compressed further by the gallery on upload and as you have rightly chosen to show that version (the large one is ideally too big for the forum) the end result is a softer version showing some compression artefacts.

I have found, as a committed Lightroom user,

that on export make the file around 800px high/wide set the quality to around 85/90 and set sharpen for screen, gives an excellent result. You can then show the large version and avoid the more compressed medium version

BTW I'd be very keen to see your panel that includes this shot, if that's at all possible. On its own I suspect it lacks something that is gained by a series of five (mmm, does that make sense

That's a fair point, I do sometime like to at least upload the large version so you can look at the detail if you want to. I'm wondering whether the forum could be set to re-sharpen the image for web-view when it resizes for the 'medium' version (I think it uses ImageMagick under the hood, so this should be possible).

I am wondering which of the portrait shots to use. The idea of this panel is that:

It's monochrome

Sets are to demonstrate a wide variety of technique and subject matter.

Mounting and print arrangement to be taken into consideration when judged.

I know at least one other panel that I will be up against (Sarah, who I did the frog shots with) and the standard will be very high.

True - but it's the automatic resizing that seems to be a bit of a pain - making the medium-size image you see in the gallery tend to look soft.

I suppose there has to be a standard baseline benchmark, otherwise images that are sharpened for their relative size would then be oversharpened on display in the forum.

That's true, but if I post an image on picasa (here's the same image for reference, http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/elliot...69348747536178), then resize the window, picasa automatically resizes and resharpens the image to fit in the window. If you try it, you'll see whatever picasa is doing, the result looks a lot better. It may be less to do with sharpening on the forum, rather the compression factor for the medium image is too high.
