Photo critique Here is where you can display your images and seek the comment, advice and, maybe, constructive critique of your work. Only post your images here if you are happy for frank feedback. If in doubt, use the beginners board instead. Only post your comments here if you feel you can make a constructive and polite contribution in response to what is, for some, a leap of faith in exposing their work to your critical comment.

Hi Andrew,
A terrific image and a great viewpoint, love the stormy out look, could do with a bit of Zap though, it looks flat on my monitor, could try adjusting the levels and/or curves a bit?
Nice work.

Hi Andrew,

The photo is nice. If you could have avoided (or cropped different) that little visible part of the ground on the bottom left then we wouldn't be able to understand from where you took the photo

It could have been taken while you were on a little boat sailing across the Pier

Regards

George

Re: Seaside Pier

I like the play of light between the blue sky above and the sunset-rain on the horizon. The pier seems to lead my eye out of the picture (According to RULE #67.A.1 subsection b-), but what are rules for except to acknowledge when they have been broken. Good shot.

Joe

Compositionally it certainly works for me. It's intriguing and it flows nicely, which is half the battle

It looks (please correct me if I'm mistaken) as if you've used a highlight/shadow recovery function in order to retrieve some detail from the original. Nothing at all wrong with that, but in this case it's left you with a image largely biased towards midtones - particularly in the sky and upper section of the pier itself. It definitely needs more contrast to give it the punch that (I feel) it needs, so I'd probably be using the curves tool - selectively - to address that. I'd be tempted to straighten the left verticals too, but that's entirely down to personal taste.

Otherwise it's great. Something a little different, which is definitely a compliment

Re: Seaside Pier

Great composition and lots to grab attention, but as has been mentioned the picture is lacking punch in the light or colours. Pretty sure its not my monitor.

Best regards

Josh

Re: Seaside Pier

Andrew, I don't think you ever mentioned if you had used the S/H tool on this image. If you did use it, I was wondering if the Photomatix tonemapping plugin may have given a more contrasty and punchy result

Re: Seaside Pier

The sky is the best part for me. A real mix of moods.
Now if you could just clone out the pier :-)

Re: Seaside Pier

Andrew Its a little dark and oppressive. I am not qualified to comment on technique, I like the composition. Maybe fiddle with levels.
