  • Dicing with Escher

Done on a wet day, when I had too much time with nothing better to do.

This is a brilliant deconstruction of my image and I applaud the effort that you have taken to "show" how my original was achieved.

However when you removed the green die, you have shown the orange die with two spots. Opposite sides of die always add up to 7 and the two spots that you have added are incorrectly oriented with respect to the two faces that are showing (the 4 and the 1) the correct edit would require 5 spots to be added to the top face of the orange die.

The real trick in doing this right is to use a high quality long telephoto, something like the 150mm f2, which I'm trying to convince the wife that I need to buy to produce these shots better. So by supporting me in showing so much interest in this image, you have added weight to my arguement.

        Thanks

The real trick is getting all the die to work as a team

It's quite simple really. I set up all the die in a 6 x 6 x 6 array all at 90 degrees. The camera is lined up so the axis of the lens is in line with the black die on top of the green die. There is another black die in the back row next to the yellow die which has to be perfectly aligned with the black die on top of the green die. Now take two shots, one with all the die then another without the black die that is on top of the green die.

With two layers in photoshop I blended the shots so that the black die from the back row looks like it's in the same place as the black die that was on top of the green die.

To make this look really good you would need to spend a lot of time getting the lighting right and using a long telephoto lens to flatten the perspective, so that all the die look the same size. I actually distorted one layer in PS to get the back row black die to look like it's the same size as the black die sitting on top of the green die.

Hopefully I have now confused you so much that you will simply have to have a go your self to see how it's done...
