  • dSLR market share (Jan-Sept) - Sony goes up!

according to Fuji Sankei News tid bit based on BCN report, in the cumulative (Japanese) market share for the period of Jan - Sept, this year, the market share of each manufacturere was as per attached graph.

    Canon and Nikon: 40.1%
    Sony: 10.0%

When viewed only Sept figures, Sony's share is 15%, they say. They say it is almost certain that Sony will get 10% throughout the year, their declared (interim) target market share when started the business in 2006.

The news also cite ironically in a sense that although Canon announced their target market share of this year was 50%, they reduced it to 45% later, saying they (Canon) cannot ignore the growth of Sony.

At the moment, both C and N reportedly do not prepare specific counter measures against Sony. - but IMHO it is very likey that they launch price war toward the Christmas sales season. (not reported in the news, though)-especially Canon in my prediction.

The total dSLR market between Jan to Aug was 5,854,000 units, up by 28% on the same period of the previous year. So it is still growing. No mention about compact digicams here. (I understand this figure refers to the total shipment globally. I may be wrong. - my personal memo is not available now.)

    p.s. starting at 12 o'clock (clockwise); Canon 40.1%, Nikon 40.1%, Sony 10.0%, Olympus 5.3%, Pentax 4.2%, Panasonic 0.2%, others 0.1%

Hi Yoshi, thanks for that. My understanding is that global digital camera sales for 2008 are projected to be about 110 million, with 7% being DSLRs, so that makes 7.7 million DSLRs. Your figure of 5.9 million DSLRs for 8 months would seem to project to 7.8 million for 12 months, so it seems certain that the figure is for global sales.

I'm not surprised--as the market expands, percent in marketshare declines.

Remember IBM when it had close to 50% of the personal computer market?
