  • Hello from Melbourne, Australia

Hello there! My name is Jocelyn. I was born in Kenya, but lived most of my life in South Africa! (Durban & Johannesburg) I emigrated to Australia 6 years ago! My main interests are Nature & Wildlife, ie anything to do with the subject including photography! I don't own a DSLR but make do with my Nikon 5900 & enviously look at DSLR's & the amazing quality of reproduction! I miss Africa & its abundance of animals & photo opportunities.

Hi Jo, welcome to the DPNow forums
I see you have already uploaded some of your photos to the gallery. Well done, do you fancy offering one for critique in the critique forum. I'm sure there are some would like the opportunity to say what they feel about your photo. also you still have time to post one in the Salon Competition which is just for fun but the theme is Living World, which could be just your sort of thing.

BTW. Though you have apparently uploaded 13 images to the gallery only 2 are showing up in your personal album. If there are others you can associate them with your personal gallery too

Hi Jocelyn - you're very welcome here on the DPNow forum! I can imagine, after seeing some superb South African wildlife shots from Wild Images and Nature Photographer how much you must miss your former home, but I should think Australia must offer a huge new potential?

          Welcome Jocelyn
How great is it to have you here I have very rarely met anyone else who has such a similar history to me. I too was born in Kenya before 1963 (I bet this applies to you too!!) and then immigrated to SA with my parents although we went to Cape Town. But I have been to Durbs and Jo'burg although I actually hate African cities. I think the last time I was in Durban was in the 60's and Jo'burg in the 70's (where I actually have an uncle living in Northcliff). My parents were nature nuts and its kind of rubbed off on us kids as well but I have never really concentrated on taking detailed nature shots of single birds, animals or insects - I prefer to do atmospheric work especially landscapes. I LOVED your African sunset picture BTW.

Quite a lot of my parents friends from Kenya landed up in Australia and that place too must have a lot to offer photography-wise so I would love to see some of your pics from there as I have never been there myself.

          cheers
          sue

Hi Jocelyn and welcome to DPNow. I wish you a nice stay here with lots of posted photos from Australia.
Your Nikon 5900 is able enough (even though a small compact) to take very nice quality shots. I do have also a Coolpix 7900 and if you are interesting you can take a look at my test and article about improving the sharpness, minimizing blown highlights and better edge definition tweak tests I conducted last year for the 7900 (it also applies to 5900) and being posted here:

            Regards

Thanks, I'm sure I will enjoy being a member of this forum. I've been made to feel very welcome by other members, like yourself! Yes thanks I would like to know how to improve on sharpness for Nikon 5900 as it is a problem & will look up your article. I'm sure it will be handy!

                Re: Hello from Melbourne, Australia

Oh wow! Jambo. Habarigani! Yes I was born in Mombasa & left with my family in 1962 when I was 10 years old. My cousin Joan was a wildlife conservationist & photographer/Film maker with her husband Alan Root, in Kenya & she was always my aspiration! I have always loved going into the African bush whenever I got the chance to be close to Nature & Wildlife. I do indeed take time out here in Australia to be close to Nature. Thanks for reply Sue (SPL)

                  Re: Hello from Melbourne, Australia

Jambo Jambo - I am afraid that is the extent of my Swahili. My father learned it in the army but I was only about 5 when I left so didn't pick it up. Have you been back since 1962. My parents had a house there in Nairobi which was sold from them after they left but the authorities in kenya would not allow the money to be sent to apartheid (i.e. sanctioned) SA so in 1976 we all went back up there for an extended holiday in a hired combi to spend it - we were there at the time of the Entebe Air Raid - in fact the day after the raid my brother and I travelled back from Nairobi airport and boy oh boy did they search us - also I came down with malaria on that flight which wasn't too great oh for the adventures of Africa

At that stage I was using an old 8mm movie camera (no sound) that my father had given me - it was all great fun. we stayed in Jadini Beach Hotel. We also went to Tsavo park for elephants, Samburu park, Mt Kenya and Lake Naivasha - all so exciting

Your childhood memories of Mombasa must be quite vivid as you were there for a full 10 years.
                  cheers
