AVG A/V Software - NO FREE UPDATES after 31 May 08

I can't find the A/V forum so perhaps someone will move this if necessary.

I have been fortunate enough to have been using Grisoft FREE A/V software for about 18 months now. For the past week or so, I have been getting a daily nag to upgrade. Now I am informed that there will be no free updates after the 31 May 2008.

Does anyone know of any good free A/V software or have I got to start paying?

I can thoroughly recommend Avast Free. Low profile, services easily selectable, and updates usually two or three times per day.

Autumn - It is probably because there is a new version 8.0 out and 7.5 is being discontinued. If you Google for "AVG 8.0 free edition" you will get a few links to where you can download it. I have installed it and as far a I can see it is working Ok as all my incoming e-mails are stamped as having been checked for viruses, similarly for outgoing mail. I am not sure if it gets updates automatically, as I do not get the old popups when I boot up like I did with 7.5. However I have just manually downloaded updates which it showed a message to state that they had been installed.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

As Dennis said, there is a Version 8.0 and I have now downloaded it. I have been very happy with AVG in the past. I shall just have to see how long it is before they decide to charge - if they do.

that was really not known by me that avg has stopped free updates after 31st may 2008. what other option is there??
