DPNow Picture of the day, Friday, August 17th 2007
Andrew Thatcher makes good use of the very early morning quality of light to capture a thought-provoking bronze sculpture during a recent DPNow member expedition to the historic city of Oxford. If you would like the chance of being featured on the DPNow Picture of the Day (POTD), make sure you upload some images to the DPNow users photo gallery, from where our POTDs are exclusively selected.

Hey guys, I know I got roasted because POTD had a break recently, but there doesn't seem to be much interest in its return
Are we doing it wrong? Do you disagree with the choice of picture? Let's here you!

I think there would be more response if the POTD was posted in a normal thread. Show the image full size with details etc. without having to go to the galleries to view. It's done like that on other sites and seems to work very well. I'll PM you an example.

Thanks Ron, but that aspect of the format isn't going to change.
I don't see it as a problem. The DPNow POTD (and it's daily, not weekly) is featured on the front page and on the forum. And it's not just a photo, it's a short article all about the photographer as well as the photo.
I feel the fact that the article links you to the gallery is a bonus too. This promotes the gallery in general as well as the featured photographer.
At the moment it's down to me to choose each POTD, which I find a bit of an imposition - not because I don't want to do it or like doing it, but because it's my personal tastes that get featured in the POTD pictures, which isn't really right. I have asked the mods to suggest some pix, but I think they found it quite hard too ... so maybe we need a better and more democratic way of choosing each POTD.
What do you think?

What about if whoever has picture of the day then looks for the next one. Or if people find that to much how about changing it to picture of the week. Doing it as potw would then give people more time to find something they like and that would also give different tastes.

Re: DPNow Picture of the day, Friday, August 17th 2007
I've always liked the concept of POTD and would be sorry to see it changed to a weekly affair. I think 5 days a week is a reasonable goal to achieve, so long as their is good quality images being regularly added to the Gallery.
POTD can be seen as something of an achievement IMO and is a recognition by ones peers of having a 'Good' image. Not only this but the way Ian does it with a mini biog and interesting snippet from the photographer adds interest and credibility to the picture too. Its position on the Front Page also adds interest and can encourage visitors to look on a daily basis.
However it needs to be maintained consistently and not left far long periods has has occasionally happened. I realise it can be difficult to come up with 20 good pics a month and get comments etc from the photographer
I would also like to see the use of random images from the galleries displayed on the forums. It may need some changes to the programming but it should be possible to select for example images to be displayed automatically that have had say 50 plus views, or been awarded 30+ TU's. These could be rotated on a visit basis, so everytime you visited the front page there was a new image, no more no less. But this to be as well as the POTD. I'd be also keen to explore the use of images from the FTU galleries on the DPNow front page

I understand Ian's comment re the POTD fitting in to his own personal taste.
How if the mods took it over in turn on either a daily or weekly basis.

Re: DPNow Picture of the day, Friday, August 17th 2007
Hello all,
Stevens Idea of the use of random images is a great Idea which I would love to see! I also agree that having POTD five days a week is a great goal. My own suggestion is to feature forum salon winners twice a month for a weekend picture feature.
